There is Power in the Blood of Jesus: Redemption and Cleansing

What is the blood of Jesus?

The blood of Jesus Christ is in reference to His own blood that He shed when He died on the cross of Calvary completely sinless for the whole world. His sacrificial death, burial, and resurrection made it possible to completely wipe out the sin penalty which was spiritual death and complete separation from God. Romans 6:23 is very clear when Paul writes, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

That gift was made possible because of the perfect Lamb of God! Before He died as the perfect Sacrifice for all sin there was a barrier between God and us. The high priest was the only one that had access to the Most Holy Place which was called the Holy of Holies where the presence of God dwelt. This was done once a year as a part of the Old Covenant sacrificial system by the High Priest to make atonement for his sins and for the sins of others.

The moment that Jesus died, the veil separating the rest of the temple and the Holy of Holies was completely torn in two, Matthew 27:50-51. What does this mean? What the ripping of the veil meant was that Jesus’ sacrifice was received as the perfect atonement for all sin resulting in direct access to God the Father through Jesus Christ. The blood of goats and bulls was never going to remove the sin penalty (Hebrews 10:4) so the precious blood of the Lamb had to be shed to atone for all sin: past sins, present sin, and future sin.

Now, the Lord no longer requires the old system which was the continual sacrifice of animals because the death of Jesus Christ on the cross was enough to cover all sin. The devil was not prepared for this curve ball that God threw at him which was that the blood of His Son would be used as the perfect Sacrifice. He thought he put an end to God’s plan when he had every boy killed under the age of 2 during the time of Herod, Matthew 2:16-18. He is no match for the Lord; God had a plan to redeem His people that nobody could interfere with including Satan and his demonic kingdom!

There are so many benefits of the blood of Jesus but in this article I am going to go into detail on some of the ways that Jesus’ blood can be applied in our lives in reference to redemption and cleansing. The tremendous power of the blood of Jesus Christ can never be underestimated; it is the perfect reconciliation back to God the Father.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I implore you to do so all He needs is a chance. It will be the best decision that you would ever make and your life will never be the same; He has the ability to completely transform you from the inside out!

Redemption

The Lord redeemed or freed, bought back the freedom of, and reclaimed every single one of us when He died and shed His innocent blood as the spotless Lamb of God. We were slaves to sin in the hands of Satan completely bound until the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross. He paid an extremely high price for our just in case: just in case we choose to follow Him, just in case we choose to genuinely love Him, just in case we choose to tell others about Who He is.

John 15:13 says it beautifully when John states; “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” He is absolute love and He sacrificed His life so that we can have ours: free from sin, reconnected to God the Father, eternal life, and so many other wonderful gifts that Jesus gave His life for us to have.

Another powerful illustration of the Lord’s love for us is in Romans 5:8 when the Apostle Paul writes, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The fact of the matter is that every single one of us is a sinner and in need of a Savior. God’s Word lets us know that we all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23.

I am going to list some Scriptures pertaining to the Power of the blood of Christ when it comes to redemption.

Ephesians 1:7

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”

In this verse of Scripture Paul is writing to the Church at Ephesus explaining to them the significance of their redemption. Not only did this allow them to be adopted as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself (Ephesians 1:5) but they were also sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise (Ephesians 1:13). This is the same for us today; every believer of Jesus Christ has been reconciled back to God the Father, given the free gift of the Holy Spirit, and has the ability to be forgiven from all sin.

Do not let the devil make you think that what you did in the past defines you; the blood of Jesus Christ has purchased your freedom. We are no longer slaves to sin as we once were before because all sin has now been atoned for. That doesn’t mean that you can sin all you want without repercussions but it does mean that sin will no longer have dominion over you, Romans 6:14. We have to remember that you will face spiritual warfare and the enemy will use every transgression against you.

As Christians we need to make it our mission to take our walk with the Lord very seriously. We were bought at a tremendous price, the life of Jesus Christ. We have to ensure that we get into the Word of God, study the Word, and apply the Word of God to our lives so that we can have a clear understanding of what the Power of the shed blood of Christ really means.

One of the free gifts that we are afforded because of what Jesus did for us at the Cross of Calvary is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

At the point of salvation you will have the Spirit of God guiding you and leading you into all truth, John 16:13. He will make sure that you do not head in the wrong direction, He will convict you of sin, and He will warn you of the enemy’s devices. This is only possible because of the redemptive work through the shedding of blood of Jesus Christ!

1 Peter 1:18-19

“Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”

Here we can see that the Lord is telling us that there was no way that we could have been redeemed or recovered with currency like silver or gold. This kind of cash is considered to be temporary and had no comparison to the limitless currency that was used to redeem every one of us and that currency was the blood of Jesus Christ.

Nothing that we could have done within our own power would have given us the ability to have freedom from sin and death. Had it not been for Jesus laying down His life for us, we would still be in bondage to sin today. Unfortunately there are so many people out there right now; believers and non-believers that are still bound by their transgressions because they don’t want to have anything to do with Jesus Christ or they are Christians but don’t have a true relationship with the Lord. We have to get to a place where we take our position with the Lord Jesus Christ seriously!

Think about it this way, He lived a sinless and perfect life fully man and fully God. He had the opportunity to call down legions of angels at a moment’s notice (Matthew 26:53) but chose not to. Instead He endured the pain that we feel, the temptations that we feel, the trials and tribulations that the devil ensnares us in; yet He did not once sin or use His power as God to overcome. He did it all for us!

He wanted to experience every bit of what we do as humans living on Earth and that is exactly what He did. He then died on the cross a horrific death taking on the sin penalty for all of humanity. So, to say that we were bought with a tremendous price is an extreme understatement. We were purchased by His blood, His tears, and His absolute love!

Cleansing

The power of the blood of Jesus has the ability to cleanse us and make us brand new. Jesus Christ dying for us on the cross as the Perfect blood Sacrifice provided us with the ability to completely purify ourselves from all unrighteousness. Before you became a believer of the Lord, you were living a life of filth, dirtiness, and uncleanliness. The Word of God says in Isaiah 64:6, “But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnessess are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.”

Taking a deeper look into this verse of Scripture you can conclude that there is no way within our own abilities that we could cleanse ourselves from the vile and nasty sin that we allow into our lives. It takes the power of Jesus and the blood of Jesus Christ to wash us clean. The fact that He died as a Perfect Sacrifice without blemish shedding His innocent blood for you and me made it possible to establish a New Covenant with God.

We have to make sure that we do our part in remaining clean by reading the Lord’s Word allowing it to renew our minds, Romans 12:2. It will require a complete transformation on your part. You will have times when you will mess up and need to repent and confess your sin before the Lord. The Word of God tells us in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Here we can visibly see that the Lord is requiring a confession of our sins in order for Him to cleanse us. It is a continual effort that we must make to guarantee that we are walking in God’s purpose for our lives. The main thing that you want to understand is the importance of repentance which means to completely turn away from the sin that you are in. Jesus already paid the price for us, now it’s our turn to abide in Him continually, John 15:4.

1 John 1:7

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

Here we can see that John through the guiding of the Holy Spirit is making a distinction about people that are walking in the light of God stating that the “…blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” This is pertaining to the believers of Jesus Christ who are now able to partake in the ability to be washed completely clean through the power of His blood.

This is a direct contrast from 1 John 1:6 where John states, “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” Here we can determine that he is referencing people that are living a life of sin walking in darkness which by default means walking with the adversary, the devil. There is no way that one can walk in darkness and claim to be of light, it doesn’t work that way.

Amos 3:3 makes it clear when the Word of God states, “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” You are either for the Lord or against Him, there is no in between. One of the requirements of becoming a recipient of the cleansing of sin through the precious blood of Jesus Christ is to first become a believer. There really is no way around it. He is the One that paid the ultimate price to give us the opportunity to ask for forgiveness and to be forgiven which in turn would lead to our purification process.

Hebrews 9:13-14

“For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

There is a lot to unpack here in these two verses of Scripture in the New Testament written by the Apostle Paul. Before Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary, sin was atoned for by the shedding blood of bulls and goats as well as other animals. This was only enough to purify the flesh making it entirely external. The blood of animals did not have the power to cleanse someone internally.

After Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection all sin was completely atoned for once and for all, Hebrews 4:12. This made it possible for every believer of the Lord Jesus Christ to be cleansed inside out. The cleansing power of the blood of Jesus has the capability to transform your heart, mind, and soul. No longer do we have to perform animal sacrifices for the remission of our sins which the Lord calls “dead works,” Hebrews 9:14.

One important part in these passages of Scripture to note is where Paul is saying for us to cleanse your conscience. How can one go about doing that? We have to remember that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 8:11) and the eternal Spirit spoken of here in (Hebrews 9:14) is referring to the Holy Spirit. He is the One that is going to guide us into all truth, John 16:13.

He will help us stay on track when it comes to the cleansing of our integrity, morality, and our principles. It is going to be a process in order for us to begin to live our lives obedient to God and His Word. We want to strive to be more like Jesus Christ every single day. He gave His life for us to have the opportunity for an eternal life with Him and we cannot take that lightly. It is a privilege that we should never take for granted!

Conclusion

The power of the blood of Jesus Christ is the reason that we have the authority to trample on the devil and his kingdom, Luke 10:19. The Lord triumphed over him making a spectacle of him openly, Colossians 2:15. He redeemed us out of the enemy’s hands and paid a tremendous price, His life. He then cleansed us from all unrighteousness reconciling us back to our Heavenly Father. Our mission should be to try to remain as sin-free as we possibly can. You do not want to go back into the hands of the enemy, it is never worth it!
