The Dangers of Pride
What is Pride?
Pride is when a person thinks too highly of his or herself. They feel like they don’t need anyone of anything to help them achieve their goals and accomplishments. It is a place of arrogance and egotism thinking that you are above others and that you “have it all together.” This way of thinking is extremely dangerous because what a person with this kind of mentality is saying is that they don’t need God’s help or guidance.
There is such thing as having healthy pride. For instance: you are proud of your child for getting good grades in school or you are proud of yourself for getting promoted at your job. Both of those examples are exhibiting healthy pride. It is when your pride turns into haughtiness and conceit that you begin to develop negative characteristics. A prideful person will have issues in their personal life as well as with their relationship with the Lord.
The spirit of pride is one that the enemy is very familiar with and in fact it is what led him to be cast of out heaven to begin with. In order to have an understanding we need to look at the verses of Scripture found in the book of Isaiah.
Isaiah 14:13-15 “For you have said in your heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’
Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,
To the lowest depths of the Pit.”
Here we can see that the Prophet Isaiah through the leading of the Holy Spirit is giving us the revelation of the fall of Lucifer. If you notice in the text there are multiple times that the Lord is emphasizing the devil’s use of the words “I will.” In other words because of his own pride and selfish ambition he wanted to be above God. Why? One of the main reasons that Satan wanted to be in the position of our Heavenly Father is because he wanted to be worshiped like the Lord.
In Matthew 4:9 the passages of Scripture reads, “And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Here we can see that the devil is speaking to Jesus and one of the things that he wants Him to do is to bow down and worship him. That is still the case today; the enemy loves when people knowingly or unknowingly give him worship.
The enemy will use your prideful thoughts to make you feel like you don’t need God. This overwhelming emotion will turn into poisonous self-reliance which means that you are not completely dependent on the Lord. If you are truly attempting to walk this Christian life entirely surrendered to our Lord Jesus Christ, you cannot afford to have one shred of sinful pride found in your heart. He wants you walking in a path of humility.
We have to remember that the Lord hates pride and makes it clear to us in many Bible verses found in the Word of God. One passage in particular is found in Proverbs 16:5 King Solomon writes, “Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.” The Lord goes so far as to call it an abomination which is the Hebrew word tôwʻêbah which means disgusting thing.
When we are filled with ourselves there is no room for God and He is supposed to be the One that comes first, Matthew 22:37. A proud heart will prevent you from being used effectively by the Lord and can actually block you from receiving blessings that He wants to bestow upon you. Pride is a very dangerous characteristic to have and it is not worth the repercussions that are attached to it.
Developing your relationship with the Holy Spirit will help you overcome the overwhelming emotion of pride. I have many articles on the Holy Spirit and I will list them here: The Holy Spirit-The Spirit of Power, Love, and a Sound Mind!, The Holy Spirit-Our Helper. and The Holy Spirit-Our Prayer Partner!
I am going to highlight three verses of Scripture that describe some of the dangers of pride:
Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.”
This Proverb written by King Solomon is describing to us that one thing is certain, pride will lead to destruction and a haughty (or proud) spirit will lead to a fall. As Christians one of the worst things that we can do is not fully understand our need of a Savior. The reason why the Lord is highlighting that Pride leads to destruction is because lacking true humility prevents you from allowing God to be the Lord over your life.
The reason why this is such a dangerous place to be is because your arrogance will make it difficult to hear the voice of God and without His guidance you are bound to head towards devastation. The enemy wants you to have the spirit of pride affecting your life because it makes it easier for him to have an influence on you. He knows that your lack of trust in the Lord can leave you vulnerable to his tactics.
When those trials and tribulations hit because they will, you are going to have a hard time overcoming the schemes of the devil within your own strength. When you are operating in egotism it limits your connection with the Lord and the Holy Spirit. So, when the enemy comes against you in a mighty way, your spiritual anemia will prevent you from having the strength to sustain his attacks.
Matthew 23:12
“And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
One of the main characteristics that Jesus displayed was humility. Everything that He did was done with a heart of complete humbleness. One of the primary examples of this was when He was put on the cross to die for the entirety of all humanity. Jesus was fully God and fully Man and could have very easily gotten Himself off of the cross at Calvary but chose not to. He is the epitome of what it means to be a humble person.
Here we can see in Matthew 23:12 that God’s Word is giving us a description of what happens to a person that maintains humility versus someone that does not. When you are filled with conceit, one of the personality traits attached to that conceit is the need to exalt yourself on a consistent basis. Some examples of this egotism are: continually announcing to all of those around you how great you are, boasting about the accomplishments that you’ve achieved, and expressing how much better you are than everyone else.
Your conduct is letting God know that you seek the approval of man rather than His opinion. The Lord frowns upon that kind of behavior and will ensure to it that that you are brought down several notches. There is no greater chastisement than that of your Heavenly Father. He knows where to hit you where it hurts in order to get you back on track. He loves you too much to let your pride get in the way of your relationship with Him.
In order for you to strengthen your walk with Jesus Christ you have to be willing to renew your mind, Romans 12:2. The Holy Spirit is the One that will guide you into all truth (John 16:13) and will help shape and mold you so that you can be used powerfully in the Kingdom of God. The Lord does not want you to remain the same (Ephesians 4:15) because if you do, your pride will get in the way of fully submitting to His direction for your life.
Proverbs 3:5-6 states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” When you have humble faith and your entire trust is in the Lord no matter what, it is easy to allow Him to have full control with no stipulations. Unfortunately, one of the hardest things for someone with a prideful heart to do is let go of the steering wheel!
Revelation 3:17
“Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.”
One of the most hazardous mind sets that a Christian can have is thinking that you don’t need the Lord for anything. We have to remember that we are fighting a real adversary every single day and his primary goal is to destroy your entire life. Within your own power and might there is no way that you are going to be able to conquer the schemes of the enemy. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to operate in our lives continually.
In the passage of Scripture that I am highlighting we can determine that the Lord is giving us a strong warning against someone assuming that they have it all together without needing Him. He goes so far as to say that they are “…wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.” We can see this displayed through celebrities over and over again. They can have all of the money in the world yet they are completely miserable.
There is nothing that can fill the void in one’s heart like Jesus Christ can. The thing is in order for Him to consume your entire heart like He wants to; He has to be your Lord and Savior. There is really no way around it. Pride causes so many barriers between you and God that it will get in the way of you living out the purpose that He has for your life.
For instance, let’s look at evangelism (spreading God’s Word). How are you going to be able to tell others about the full Gospel of Jesus Christ and Who He is if you are not living out what is written in His Word. There are so many Scriptures that the Lord discloses to us as believers of Jesus Christ about the importance of maintaining humility. It is the first step to living a surrendered life.
Conclusion
There is no doubt about it, we need God’s mercy and God’s grace every single day of our lives, Lamentations 3:22-23. If we have pride, arrogance, conceit, or egotism in our hearts it is difficult to grasp that concept. To live a victorious life as Christians we have to be willing to give Him full control. There cannot be two drivers in any vehicle, it’s impossible.
Pride causes destruction and when you think that you don’t need God for anything it puts you in a category of someone that is wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. The Lord loves you so much that He will begin to prick your heart so that you can realize the damage that your arrogance is causing.
If you insist on allowing your pride to take over your life then the Lord will remove His hands and allow you to do things your way. Trust and believe that is something that you do not want Him to do. When you don’t have the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit it is like you are walking around with blinders on. You can’t see where you’re going and you most definitely can’t see the enemy coming and that is a very dangerous place to be!
