There is Power in the Blood of Jesus: Justification and Sanctification
What does it mean to be covered by the blood of Jesus?
Jesus Christ sacrificed His life on the cross of Calvary so that our sin penalty would be completely paid for. The blood that was shed covers our transgressions so when the Father sees us He sees His Son. There was no longer a barrier between believers and God, the veil located in the Holy of Holies was ripped in two giving us direct access to God the Father, Matthew 27:51.
Before the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ there was an Old Covenant sacrificial system that needed to take place in order to atone for sin. This old method required that an animal without spot or blemish needed to be sacrificed. This was something that had to be done every year continually.
Why? The blood of bulls, the blood of goats, and the blood of animals was not sufficient enough to cover sin permanently. This was only a momentary process used that would purify the flesh temporarily. The blood of animals did not have the power to cleanse us internally. The Lord would only accept a perfect sacrifice; His son the spotless Lamb of God laid down His life which in turn was accepted forming a New Covenant God.
Why was this so important? The reason why Jesus’ sacrifice was so significant is because He paid the price for all sin snatching us out of the hands of the devil and his demonic kingdom. Colossians 2:14-15 dictates it beautifully when it states,” having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”
The magnitude of these two verses is unexplainable! Satan, the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10) can no longer accuse us day and night as he used to as long as we remain in right standing with God through the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Sin can no longer have dominion over us, Romans 6:14.
The main thing to keep in mind is we have to do everything in our power to refrain from having anything to do with sin, the devil, or his demonic kingdom. The blood of Jesus gives us the power to do so. We also need to stay in the Word of God, Studying to show ourselves approved, and applying it to our lives, 2 Timothy 2:15. This is how you can stay out of the hands of the enemy who would love nothing more than to keep you bound!
If you haven’t read the article I wrote before this one, please do. It will give you an idea of how the blood is used for redemption and cleansing. It’s called There is Power in the Blood of Jesus-Redemption and Cleansing!
I am going to share some Scriptures that you can meditate on about the power of the blood of Jesus in regards to justification and sanctification.
Justification
When Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, completed His atoning sacrificial work on the cross of Calvary He completely paid the sin debt for the whole world. This would include past sins, present sin, and future sin. Now when God looks at us, He doesn’t see our sin, He sees His Son Jesus and we are treated as if we never transgressed. The Lord’s amazing mercy and grace allows us to be declared righteous through the righteousness of Christ, 2 Corinthians 5:21. He wipes our slate clean and it is just as if it never happened.
Some of the words that describe how the Lord feels about our sin after we have been justified through the blood of Christ are:
- He removes them as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12).
- He blots your sins out and remembers them no more (Isaiah 43:25).
- He washes you sins that resemble scarlet and makes them whiter than snow (Isaiah 1:18).
As we can see the Lord truly forgives us of our iniquities and completely forgets that we ever transgressed against Him. We have to be very careful not to take advantage of God’s grace. Just because He is faithful to forgive us of our transgressions does not mean that we are at full liberty to make a habit of sinning. We still have to remain obedient to the Word of God and His will for our lives.
To be justified also means that you are positioned in Christ Jesus declared to be in right standing according to the law of God. He is absolute love but He is also a just God and requires His children to remain obedient to His laws, principles, and will for our lives. His justice demands that there is penalty for all sin regardless of what it is. We need to keep in mind that the power of the blood of Jesus Christ declares us blameless but not sinless.
The Word of God in Romans 3:23 states, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” We are all sinners serving a perfect God but that does not mean that we don’t have the ability to overcome our temptation to sin. Through the power of the precious blood of Christ we are no longer slaves to our transgressions.
I am going to highlight a Scripture that you can meditate on that will give you an idea about what it means to be justified by the power of the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:9
“Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.”
As we dive into this passage of Scripture we can conclude that the blood of Jesus Christ is sufficient enough to prevent us from facing the wrath of the living God. Because of the blood of His son Jesus Christ, all believers are in right standing with God and that justification will protect us from facing the wrath that is to come: the wrath of the devil during the tribulation period (Revelation 12:12) and the wrath of God on the children of disobedience (Hebrews 12:29), (Colossians 3:6).
Had it not been for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we would all be completely separated from God eternally on our way to hell fire. We would not have a chance at eternal life, salvation, or redemption. Romans 5:8 reveals the Lord’s love for us when it states, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
What Christ had to go through for all of humanity can only be summed up in one word, love. We still don’t deserve the Lord’s amazing mercy and grace but He loved us so much that He was willing to shed the innocent blood of His Son for the entirety of the world. If you think about all the sin that you have committed, the sin that you continue to commit, and the sin that you will commit it is unfathomable how He is able to forgive and truly forget every one of them, but He does.
Jesus’ sacrifice for us is crucial to the life of every believer but we have to know who we are in Christ. We need to be bold standing confidently knowing that we are completely justified because of the power of the blood of Jesus. Declare God’s Word over your life so when the devil tries to give you a guilty conscience making you think that your sins have not been forgiven and that you are not in right standing in God’s eyes, you can say “it is written…”
Sanctification
When we break down what sanctification means we can determine that it is the process of a person or thing being set apart and purified to be used by God for His intended purpose. The fact that our Lord Jesus Christ lived a perfect life without sin and shed His blood on the cross of Calvary is what gives us the ability to live a sanctified life. We are washed and cleansed by the tremendous power of the blood of Christ. Sanctification is an ongoing process that begins the moment that you accept Jesus into your heart and life.
The Greek Word for sanctify is agiázo which means to make holy. Jesus’ blood has the power that we need to make us holy. In order for this transformation to take place, we have to be willing to let go of everything that we used to be that doesn’t line up with God’s purpose for our lives. We have to remember that He created us in His image (Genesis 1:27) so the more we strive to renew and transform our minds (Romans 12:2), the more we will have a mind like Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).
This is definitely not something that is going to take place overnight but will continue on as you live your life dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truth, John 16:13. Think about it this way; the Lord has to remove all of that dirt, grime, and gunk called sin that has been built up in your heart and mind over the years. That kind of conversion is not an easy process for anyone.
I know for me when I first got saved and delivered by the power of Jesus, I had a mouth that could make a sailor blush, I drank alcohol like a fish, and I had a heart that needed healing. He found me in the gutter, cleansed me, purified me with pure water (Hebrews 10:22), and I am still going through the sanctification process daily as we all will.
The good news is that once you become a Christian you now have the powerful and precious blood of the lamb giving you the strength to overcome sin and take shelter when enticement comes your way. We have to keep in mind that you are going to face spiritual warfare because the devil is not going to just let you go easily. You are going to be faced with the temptation to sin considering the fact that your sanctification process doesn’t make you sinless; it makes you blameless in the eyes of God.
That is why it is imperative that you remain in the Word of God, studying it, and applying it to your life. That allows you to have the Scriptures embedded in your heart paired with the power of the blood of Christ to triumph over the tactics of the enemy!
I am going to share a verse of Scripture that you can meditate on pertaining to sanctification which is one of the benefits of the blood of Jesus.
Hebrews 13:12
“Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.”
This verse of scripture is a direct reflection of the lengths that Jesus Christ went for every one of us. He loved us so much that He was willing to sacrifice His life enduring a horrific death outside the walls of Jerusalem in the same area where they had animal sacrifices, Hebrews 13:11. He tolerated being treated like He was unwanted by people that hated Him for absolutely no reason.
He came to save and redeem all of mankind (Luke 19:10) which in turn would snatch us out of the hands of the devil, giving us the power over the enemy, Luke 10:19. He gave us the ability to be cleansed, justified, and purified by His own blood that was shed on the cross of Calvary. There is no greater love than someone that lays His life down for His friends, John 15:13.
He wanted to make sure that we had a way out of the enslavement of sin, a way to reconcile the eternal separation with God the Father, and an escape to the pathway to hell fire. As strong as He was He still struggled with the severity of what He was going to have to endure as the perfect reconciliation between man and God, Luke 22:42.
Knowing everything that the Lord went through on our behalf we should want to strive to have a life of sanctification and holiness. The closer to Him that you become dwelling in God’s presence, the less you will want to live in sin; it’s inevitable. You will not want to have anything to do with the things of this world because you know that they are only temporary. Eternal life is afforded to us because of Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross.
Conclusion
The atoning work of Jesus our Lord and Savior can never be underestimated. There is power in the Name of Jesus and there is power in the blood of Jesus. A lot of times we don’t realize all the things that we are given as believers of Christ. I am still learning every single day all of the wonderful gifts that the Lord destined for every one of us to have as His Children.
