The Lord’s Model Prayer-Deliver us from Temptation
One of the greatest misconceptions that a lot of Christians have is that we really don’t have to pray because God’s will on earth will be done no matter what. If the Lord did not think that prayer was important He wouldn’t have given us a Model prayer to follow found in the Book of Matthew and the Book of Luke. In fact there are several different places in the New Testament that reveal the fact that Jesus Christ prayed to our Heavenly Father continually. One of those instances is found in John 17:11.
Jesus was demonstrating to us the need for prayer. It is one of the main ways that we can communicate with the Lord. He wants to hear from us daily and not just for a moment on a Sunday afternoon church service. Just like you would speak to your spouse, children, or those that are in your inner circle you want to talk to the Lord in the same way.
He is a loving Father and desires to have an intimate relationship with every one of His children. Make it a point to set aside alone time daily with God just to communicate and touch basis with Him. Jesus Christ knew how significant prayer was and that is why He provided us with a guideline of how we should pray.
What continual prayer does is invites the Lord to implement His will without violating our own free will. God will never go against His Word and in fact places it above His own Name, Psalm 138:2. So when He gave us dominion over the Earth, that is exactly what He meant. He is not going to force us to call on Him, lean on Him, or rely on Him for anything. He loves us so much that He is giving us the choice of whether or not we will trust Him.
Let’s take a closer look at the Lord’s Model Prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13, I have posted it down below.
Matthew 6:9-13
“In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
As we can see right before the prayer is being made the Lord gives us some vital information when He indicates “in this manner.” What that lets us know is that the Lord wants us to use this prayer as an outline on how to pray effectively. That is why every part of the prayer is important and we need to understand each portion in its entirety.
We are going to focus our attention on the fifth part of the Lord’s Model Prayer.
Matthew 6:13
“And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one…”
The word “temptation” being used is the Greek word “peirasmos” which means: trial of a man’s fidelity, integrity, virtue, constancy, or an enticement to sin. It also means: adversity, affliction, trouble, or trial. The word “deliver” being used here is the Greek word “ryomai” which means: to draw to one’s self, to rescue, and to deliver.
The words “evil one” being used is the Greek word “ponēros” which means: the wicked man and the devil. So what we can piece together by dissecting these powerful words is the fact that Jesus wants us protected from temptation. He knew what temptation felt like as Matthew 4:1 reveals, “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”
He knew the significance of praying against temptation and added that element into the Model Prayer for us to incorporate. We can see the damage that temptation does to a person as it means affliction and trouble. That is why it is vital that we pray against all schemes and strategies of the devil daily. When we invite the Lord to intervene in our situations, He will rescue you and He wants to.
What does it mean to be tempted?
One thing that we know beyond a shadow of a doubt is that the Lord will never tempt us. James 1:13-14 details, “Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.” One of the key words to highlight from these passages of Scripture is the word “own.” In other words these temptations are personal and are different for every person.
The same temptations that the devil will try to entice me with are not the same that he will attempt to seduce you with. The word “desires” being used is the Greek word “epithymia” which means: desire, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden, and lust. So in other words anything that is going to create a wedge between you and the Lord, the devil will use against you.
The word “enticed” being used in these verses of Scripture is the Greek word “deleazō” which means: to bait and to catch. Just like a fisherman uses bait in his hook to catch a fish, that is exactly what the enemy does using the bait found in the World. How many of us get caught entertaining the enemy’s devices?
Jesus understood exactly how the devil would ensnare us with his demonic traps and that is why He included praying against temptation in the Lord’s Model Prayer. We need to make it a point to pray that our minds and hearts remain pure before the Lord.
What can a person do to resist temptation?
The Lord is such a good Father making sure that He provided us with ways to fight the devil’s attacks. James 4:7-8 is very clear as James states, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” We are being told exactly what to do to resist the devil and that is to draw near unto God.
He will never lead you the wrong direction but you have to be willing to ask and allow Him to guide you. Another important factor to ensuring that you are resisting temptation is to make sure that you are cleansing your hands and purifying your heart. When temptation peaks its nasty head, the Lord will always provide you with a way of escape, 1 Corinthians 10:13.
One thing that we need to make sure that we are doing daily is renewing our minds. Romans 12:2 explains, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” We need to incorporate God’s Word into our daily lives and live by what is written in the Scriptures becoming a doer of the Word, James 1:22.
Our minds should be transformed into the mind of Christ following the principles and regulations found in His Word. The fact is that the Lord is more than willing to teach those that fear (reverence) Him the absolute Truth. Psalm 25:12 reveals, “Who is the man that fears the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.”
Conclusion
No matter what you might think about prayer or what’s been said about it, there is so much power in prayer. The enemy wants you to be nonchalant about it because he knows just how potent it is. Jesus would often go to a secluded place by Himself to pray to the Heavenly Father in heaven. How much more do we need to do the same?
Jesus knows the significance of prayer and that is why He gave us an outline that we can follow that teaches us the manner that we should pray. This article focuses on the fifth part of the Model Prayer which deals with temptation and protection for the evil one, the devil.
