The Lord’s Model Prayer-Yours is the Kingdom

One of the greatest and most dangerous misconceptions that a lot of Christians believe is that we really don’t have to pray because the Lord’s will on Earth will happen regardless. That is very far from the truth because the reality is that God wants us to commune with Him daily. Prayer is communication with your Heavenly Father.

He doesn’t want to just hear from you for a moment on a Sunday afternoon church service. Just like you would speak to your spouse, children, or those that are in your inner circle you want to talk to the Lord in the same way. There is no other relationship that is more significant than the one with your Heavenly Father. There are several Bible verses that explain to us why prayer is so vital to every believer of Jesus Christ.

For Example:

1 Chronicles 16:11 “Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face evermore!”

-Prayer gives us God’s strength in times of trouble

2 Chronicles 7:14 “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

-Prayer can change a Nation

Jeremiah 29:12 “Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.”

-When you pray to God, He will listen

Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

-Prayer strengthens you in times of temptation

Matthew 21:22 “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

-Prayer plus your belief and faith will allow you to receive

These are just a few examples of Scripture that give us an idea of the importance of prayer. The Lord is a loving Father and desires to have an intimate relationship with every one of His children. Make it a point to set aside alone time daily with God just to communicate and touch basis with Him.

We have to get to a place where we have an understanding of the necessity and the power of prayer. While Jesus was on Earth He often went alone to pray to the Father. He comprehended the need to pray so much so that He gave us an outline on the key parts that we should include in our prayer time with God.

Let’s take a closer look at the Lord’s Model Prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13, I have posted it down below.

Matthew 6:9-13

“In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

There are so many key elements to this prayer and it is crucial that you gain as much knowledge as you can pertaining to each portion of this prayer. I am going to focus on the very last section of the last verse in the Lord’s Model Prayer.

Matthew 6:13

“…For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

The word “kingdom” being used is the Greek word basileia which means: God’s Heavenly Kingdom. The word “power” being used here is the Greek word dynamis which means: Kingly power of God. The word “glory” being used is the Greek word doxa which means: the Kingly majesty which belongs to Him as the supreme Ruler.

What we can determine from the key words within this powerful passage of Scripture is the fact that God is still completely in control. He is the definitive Ruler over all of creation and His purpose for this world will ultimately prevail. Numbers 23:19 determines, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

What the Lord is revealing to us in this passage of Scripture is the fact that He says what He means and He means what He says. We should take His Word at face value and what the Bible states will come to pass whether we are on board or not. Another thing that we don’t want to overlook is that God places the Scriptures even above His own Name, Psalm 138:2.

That should give us an indication of how important the Word of God actually is. Never forget that every single thing written in the Bible will come to pass and a great number of prophecies already have. What that reveals is that all things in the Word of God will be fulfilled including the Great Tribulation found in the Book of Revelation. That is why it is imperative that we keep our eyes focused on Christ in continual prayer not allowing the world to distract us.

Nonetheless, we know that the Lord gives us free will and the choice on whether or not we want to love Him and does not force us to. His desire is to have an intimate relationship with every single one of us but ultimately it is a personal choice that we all have to make. If you choose to follow Him, the plan that He has for your life is so much greater than you can ever imagine.

However, Matthew 12:30 gives us an idea of what happens to those that choose to do things their own way. It states, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.” The last thing that you want is to be against the Lord instead of going in the direction and path that He has already laid out for you.

Power

Going back to the primary text found in Matthew 6:13 we can see that power is mentioned pertaining to the Lord’s Omnipotence. He is all powerful and His power is limitless. There are many areas within the Word of God that detail His amazing power.

For example:

Jeremiah 32:17 “Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.”

2 Peter 1:3 “As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.”

Psalm 62:11 “God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God.”

What we can determine from these passages of Scripture is the fact that God is all powerful and He is the source of limitless power. The Lord is such a good Father that He allows us to have a choice of whether or not we will choose to follow Him. He does not force salvation on us but makes it clear that it is a Free gift, Ephesians 2:8-9.

However, we must never underestimate the Lord’s power in the sense that His will on Earth will come to pass as it is written in the Scriptures. There is no power greater than His and that is why we should seek His face continually for direction, guidance, wisdom, and strength. In the times that we are living in there is nothing more important that our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 6:10 states it perfectly when the Apostle Paul says, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” The moment that you think that you have things figured out on your own and you don’t need the help of the Lord is the very moment that the enemy will take full advantage of your lack of knowledge and spiritual awareness.

Glory

The final part of the passage of Scripture out of the Lord’s Model prayer that I want to highlight is the word glory. It is the Greek word doxa which means: kingly majesty which belongs to God. Throughout the Scriptures we can see that the Lord is very clear about how He feels regarding His glory being given to someone or something else. Isaiah 42:8 details, “I am the Lord, that is My name; and My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to carved images.”

On multiple occasions in the Old Testament the moment that Israel decided to share God’s glory with another idol, carved image, or false god they would face terrible consequences. The Lord gave definitive instructions on the repercussions of idol worship.

Deuteronomy 13:6-7 is one example as we can see the warning, “If your brother, the son of your mother, your son or your daughter, the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers,  of the gods of the people which are all around you, near to you or far off from you, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth. You shall not consent to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him or conceal him.”

Then we see the result of disobedience in Deuteronomy 13: 8-9, “But you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people.” We can see beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Lord does not play about His glory.

He is the only One that deserves all of the praise, honor, and glory and Him alone. He is our Creator and the One that sacrificed His only Son for our “maybe.” Romans 1:25 sums it up perfectly when the Apostle Paul reveals idol worship, “Who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.” Do not let that be you.

Conclusion

A lot of times believers of Jesus Christ underestimate the power of prayer. It is a daily necessity and in fact it is one of the primary ways that we can develop intimacy with our Heavenly Father. He wants to hear from every single one of us and not just on a Sunday afternoon church service. The thing is that we all have been given free will to make the choice on whether or not we want a relationship with God and it is never forced.

In this article we can see how the Lord is the ultimate Ruler, all Powerful, and all of the glory belongs to Him. He will always have the final say and the Word of God will be fulfilled and is being fulfilled right now as we speak. Not one of His Words will return to Him void, Isaiah 55:11. That is why it is imperative that we make a decision: we either live our lives advancing the kingdom of God or the kingdom of darkness there is no in between.
