Being sure of your Salvation-The Holy Spirit will Testify Of It
One of the most important free gifts that we have been afforded to receive as believers of Jesus Christ is the gift of Salvation. The death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord are what have guaranteed us the ability to obtain salvation if we choose to. It is given freely but it is not forced upon anyone. God created every single one of us with free will meaning that we have the choice to love Him with all of our hearts or not.
If the Lord had not followed through with sacrificing His life for you and me, the result would have been everlasting separation from God. Now because of Christ we have hope that there is a life after this one for every believer, Jesus has already prepared a place for us, John 14:3. Make no mistake at all, there is only One Way to get to into heaven, One Way to have a relationship with the Heavenly Father, and One Way for salvation and that is through the Lord Jesus Christ, John 14:5-7.
Truly being saved means that you have established a genuine relationship with the Lord, you can’t just know who Jesus is, know of Jesus, or live through someone else’s relationship with Jesus. You have to have your own personal alone time developing intimacy with our Lord and Savior striving to obey His commandments becoming more like Him each and every day, John 14:15.
Luckily the Lord provided every Christian with another gift and that is the gift of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of every believer. Acts 2:38 gives us detailed revelation as it states, “Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Another area in the Scriptures that discloses the free gift of the Spirit of God is found in Luke 11:13 and it states, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
We can see in multiple sections of the Bible where the Lord is revealing to us that the Holy Spirit is a free gift given to believers of Jesus Christ. Jesus knew how important the ministry of the Spirit of God was and how much we needed Him. John 16:7 reveals, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.”
The Holy Spirit is the third part of the trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He plays so many vital roles in the life of every Christian including guiding us into absolute Truth (John 16:13) and being our Helper (John 14:26) bringing all things that the Lord has said back to our remembrance.
One of His primary roles is to point every believer back to Jesus Christ as the Scriptures detail. In John 16:14 Jesus states, “He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” As we can see here Jesus is disclosing to us that the Holy Spirit will glorify Him and Him alone. It is vital that we understand that the Spirit of God will not give the Lord’s glory to a pastor, leader, apostle, etc.
We can never underestimate what Jesus did for us on the Cross at Calvary. If it hadn’t been for the Lord laying His life down to pay the sin debt for all of humanity we would be eternally separated from God. The free gift of Salvation wouldn’t even be an option for us. Knowing that you have an eternal home with our Heavenly Father is an amazing feeling and it is important that you are sure of your Salvation.
Another major role that the Holy Spirit plays is testifying of our Salvation. Let’s take a look at some key Scriptures that reveal this truth.
Romans 8:16
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
What we can determine from this powerful verse of Scripture is that the Apostle Paul is making it clear that the Holy Spirit will bear witness with our own spirit that we belong to the Lord. This also includes the assurance of knowing that we are saved and when we take our last breath on Earth we will be present with God.
2 Corinthians 5:8 details, “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” The Apostle Paul is using the word “confident” meaning that we are self-assured that we will be present with the Lord the moment that we die. I don’t know about you, but for me that is going to be such an amazing moment in time and I want Him to look at me and say “well done good and faithful servant!” Matthew 25:21.
Now let’s take a closer look at the passage of Scripture out of the book of Romans. The word “children” being used is the Greek word “teknon” which means: those to whom, as dearly beloved by God, has appointed salvation by Christ. The lord is clear that His children have a special place with Him, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in heaven.
This is comforting to every Christian that has received the free gift of Salvation. One of the main things that we need to do as believers of Jesus Christ is study to show ourselves approved daily by rightly dividing the Word of Truth, 2 Timothy 2:15. This will ensure that we are living our lives upright in the Lord’s eyes to the best of our abilities.
Another Scripture that discloses how the Holy Spirit reveals to us the assurance of Salvation is found in the book Ephesians.
Ephesians 1:13
“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.”
Paul through the leading of the Holy Spirit is reflecting on the fact that people that hear the gospel of Salvation begin to believe in Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross. Those that believe and become born again believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit which would indicate ownership.
The presence of the Spirit of God in our lives will be evident in the way that we walk, talk, act, and think. One of His sole roles in a Christian life is to wash and cleanse us from the inside out through the Word of God. When you allow the Holy Spirit to guide and direct your path it will be inevitably clear that you are a child of God.
Titus 3:5 details, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.” As we can see here the Apostle Paul is revealing to us that one of the primary functions of the Spirit of God is to wash, regenerate, and renew our minds.
Now let’s take a closer look at the passage of Scripture that I am highlighting out of the book of Ephesians. The word “word” being used here is the Greek word “logos” which means: instruction concerning the salvation obtained through Christ. The words “of truth” being used is the Greek word “alētheia” which means: the truth as taught in the Christian religion, respecting God and the execution of His purposes through Christ.
When we dissect these words out of this powerful passage of Scripture we can determine that the Apostle Paul is letting us know that the instruction concerning salvation is obtained through Christ. Where is the information located? It is located In the Word of God. Then Paul mentions the word “truth” and what he is referring to is the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The last words that I want to highlight out of the verse of Scripture are the words “you were sealed.” The Greek word for you were sealed is “sphragizō” which means: respecting God who by the gift of the Holy Spirit indicates who we are. So once again the Lord is reiterating the fact that allowing the Spirit of God to be a factor in our lives denotes His ownership over us.
Conclusion
One of the most amazing free gifts that we have been given by the Lord is the free gift of Salvation. We didn’t do anything to earn it and in fact the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are what are allowing us to have the opportunity of Salvation to begin with.
Another free gift that the Lord died for us to receive is the gift of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us. He is the One that guides us into absolute truth, brings Scriptures to our remembrance, and assures us of our Salvation. He plays a very important role in the life of every believer of Jesus Christ and one of those roles is assuring us of our Salvation.
