Being sure of your Salvation-Self Examination

One of the best gifts that believers of Jesus Christ have received is the free gift of Salvation. The death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior are what have afforded Christians the opportunity to have an eternal life in heaven. We can never underestimate the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross at Calvary paying the entire sin debt for the entire human race.

With our sin debt past, present, and future paid in full why are so many Christians still asking the question “Am I really saved?” With so many deceitful teachings, sermons, and doctrines it can get confusing. One thing that we know for sure beyond a shadow of a doubt is that Salvation is a free gift that you don’t have to work to receive it. Remember Ephesians 2:8 details, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

What we can determine from this powerful passage of Scripture written by the Apostle Paul is that we cannot receive salvation by anything that we do, will do, or have already done. It is a free gift from God and it is only through the atoning work of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary that we are even eligible for salvation to begin with, Acts 4:10-12.

Unfortunately many Christians don’t feel assured that they are truly saved because of the things that they have been told. False preaching will lead you down the wrong path making things unclear and uncertain. When I don’t feel confident about a word that a pastor gave or something that I heard someone say, I go straight to the Word of God. The Scriptures will not lie and in fact the Lord places them above even His own Name, Psalm 138:2.

With the way that things are going on in the World right now you cannot afford to be led astray. God is clear that in the last days there would be doctrines of demons (1 Timothy 4:1) and that is why it is vital that you study to show yourself approved (2 Timothy 2:15). That way, you will not be swayed by every wind of doctrine that comes your way (Ephesians 4:14) but you will be planted on the firm foundation.

Another way that you can make sure that you are truly saved and born again is by doing some self-examination. Let’s take a look at some passages of Scripture that reveal the importance of examining your walk with Christ daily.

James 1:22-23

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror.”

These verses of Scripture out of the book of James are giving us some very revealing information regarding being a doer of the Word versus just a hearer of the Word only. Before we can determine how these passages tie into a person’s self-examination, we need to take a look at what James had to say before he mentions this verse.

James 1:21 discloses “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” Here we can see that James is letting us know that the only way to get rid of the filth and wickedness found in your life is by implanting the Lord’s Word which will save your soul.

The reason why this is effective is because allowing the Word of God to saturate your heart and mind transforms the way that you think, Romans 12:2. This process will allow you to filter your actions and your character through the Lord’s Word.

The Holy Spirit will guide you and lead you the right direction using Scripture, John 16:13. Within our own selves and in our own power it would be almost impossible to remain a doer of God’s Word. That is why the Spirit of God is so critical to the life of every believer of Jesus Christ.

He will help keep you from veering off track so that you can rest assured that you are saved and will one day be with the Lord for eternity. You can’t be a believer of Jesus Christ and be in the world at the same time, it will not work. John 17:16 reveals, “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” Jesus is letting us know that His children will resemble Him which is the complete opposite of the world looks like.

Don’t underestimate what the Lord’s Word can do in your life; it is literally our spiritual daily food. The Holy Spirit that dwells on the inside of you will keep you on course when it comes to living for God in Spirit and in Truth, John 4:24. He is a key part to you safeguarding your Salvation.

Now let’s take a look at the second Scripture out of the book of James that I am highlighting, James 1:23 and it reveals, “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror.” What James is revealing to us is that the Word of God is like a mirror that exposes all of the things that need changing. It is then up to you on whether or not you want to make those necessary changes.

This is why self-examination is so significant because it allows you to be real with yourself when it comes to being a believer of Jesus Christ. Are you being a doer of God’s Word to the best of your ability? Is there a significant change from the old you and the new you since you became a believer? Can the people around you tell that you are a Christian without you saying one word? Ask yourself these questions and keep it 100% when giving your responses.

A mirror doesn’t lie and the reflection that is looking back at you is exactly what it is. In the same sense, the Word of God does not lie and when you filter yourself through the Scriptures it will reveal to you who you truly are. One of the hardest things that I had to understand that is critical to a believer is forgiveness. It is a hard pill to swallow when the person looking back at you in that mirror is filled with hurt and pain. The thing is releasing others isn’t of them, it’s for you!

Conclusion

When we think of Salvation we don’t truly understand the sacrifice that was made in order for us to have the opportunity to be saved. The Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary and rose again defeating the powers of darkness and paid our entire sin debt in full. What that did was allowed every born again believer to be reconnected with God the Father.

What Jesus did for us is such an incredible act of love that it cannot be put into words. He died for our “just in case” just in case we choose to love Him and want to spend eternity with Him; He has given us a way to do that. Never take your salvation for granted and ensure that you truly saved and living your life upright in the eyes of the Lord.
