Praying for your unsaved Loved Ones-Pray the Word of God
One of the greatest gifts that the Lord Jesus Christ died for humanity to have is the free gift of salvation. He died a horrible and excruciating death on the cross at Calvary so that the sin debt of the world would be paid for in full. What that did was reconciled us back to our Heavenly Father, 2 Corinthians 5:18-19.
Let’s take a look at who qualifies for the free gift of salvation. It is laid out for us in Romans 10:9-10. It states “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
The first step to receiving salvation is recognizing that you are a sinner and need a savior, this can be anyone. Secondly, we must believe in our heart that Jesus Christ is Whom He says He is and that He was raised from the dead to pay for our sins, those are the ones that will receive salvation. Remember Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father in heaven, there is no other way, John 14:6. The Lord must be acknowledged for the sacrifice that He made allowing us to have the chance at eternal life.
Salvation is one of the most important things that you can share with your family, friends, and even with strangers. Knowing and understanding that when you take your last breath on this Earth you will go to one of two places for all of eternity should make it a priority for you to spread the gospel. It is so important that we pray for our loved ones every single day to receive the free gift of salvation.
Unfortunately, we are up against a very powerful adversary that wants nothing more than to steal, kill, and destroy, John 10:10. He wants to drag every one of us to hell with him and will stop at nothing to do so. That is why it is imperative that we include the Word of God when we are praying for our family members to be saved.
Let’s take a look at two passages of Scripture that reveal the state of the minds of our unsaved loved ones.
2 Corinthians 4:3-4
“But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.”
Here we can see that Paul is disclosing to us what the devil does to the minds of every unbeliever. The words “has blinded” being used here is the Greek word “typhloō” which means: to blunt the mental discernment and darken the mind. What this does is makes it more difficult for the gospel of Christ to penetrate their hearts.
That is why it is crucial that we pray that the Lord would lift the scales off of the eyes of our unsaved loved ones that we are praying for, Acts 9:18. We also need to pray that the Lord would turn their heart of stone into a heart of flesh, Ezekiel 36:26. A lot of people have darkened hearts that need to be penetrated by God’s love.
Let’s also clarify who the god of this age actually is. Ephesians 2:2 breaks it down for us when Paul states, “in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience.” Paul is revealing to us that Satan is the god of this world or the prince of the power of the air and is also the one who is working in the sons of disobedience.
Now that we know how the devil operates, we need to learn how to pray against his tactics. Hosea 4:6 discloses to us that we perish because of a lack of knowledge and 2 Corinthians 2:11 details that we are not to be ignorant of the devil’s devices. That is why praying the Scriptures can produce tremendous breakthrough.
Jesus Christ Himself came against the devil with the word of God and we can see this demonstrated in Matthew 4:4, Matthew 4:7, and Matthew 4:10. If the Lord used the Word of God to combat the devil, we most definitely need to be doing the same thing.
How would someone pray the Scriptures?
Before we get into how to pray the Word of God we need to have a clear understanding of just how powerful it really is. Ephesians 6:17 details to us exactly what God’s Word is when the Apostle Paul states, “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” What we can obtain by what Paul revealed to us in this passage of Scripture is the fact that the Word of God is the “sword” or “a weapon of war that has the power of life and death.”
God’s Words are not just empty verbiage; they have power to combat the devil and his demonic kingdom. Hebrews 4:12 also lets us know, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…” The Scriptures are living, and they are very powerful! It is to our advantage that we proclaim them over ourselves and our loved ones!
Some examples of what this would look like:
Say for instance the person that you have been praying to receive salvation has issues with depression, you would pray Scriptures directly against depression.
Psalm 34:18 states, “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” Your prayer would be something like: Lord Your Word says in Psalm 34:18 that you are near to those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit, so I am asking that you draw near to (enter the name of your loved one) and heal their broken heart and lift the depression off of them.
You can also begin to bind all demonic influence and release peace over them. Matthew 18:18 is very clear when the Lord Jesus Himself declares, “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
The Lord has given us authority of all the power over the enemy and believers of Jesus Christ have the authority to bind up those demonic influences and release God’s promises over our family members.
Another example of praying the Scriptures is: say for instance the person that you are praying for is bound by lust and perversion. You can combat the devil’s grip by praying God’s Word. Psalm 101:3 dictates, “I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.”
You can say something like: Lord your Word says in Psalm 101:3 that nothing wicked should be set before our eyes and so I am asking that you purify the things that (enter the name of your loved one) is seeing and purify their thoughts and imaginations. Let them meditate on Your Word and remove all lustful and perverted thoughts out of their mind.
You can also begin to bind all demonic spirits of perversion and lust and command them to be removed from their life. We need to understand the power and authority that Christ has given every single believer! Intercede in the spiritual realm for your loved ones. Remember the battle that we face is not against flesh and blood but against wickedness in the heavenly places, Ephesians 6:12.
You can pray targeted Scripture prayers for every single stronghold that your family members are facing. Get a prayer journal and write down the Scriptures that are directly pertaining to your loved one’s situation. Intercede for them in prayer and watch how the Lord transforms their hearts and minds. Never forget that you may be the only person that is intervening for them!
Here are some passages of Scripture to remind you of the authority you have through Jesus Christ:
Matthew 28:18 “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”
Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
Matthew 16:19 “And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Never forget that we are ambassadors of Jesus Christ and we need to take the authority that He gave us and combat the devil and his kingdom through the power of prayer!
Conclusion
Make no mistake about it, we are up against a very powerful adversary that wants nothing more than to destroy our lives. As believers it is our responsibility to be aware of the devil’s devices. One of them is blinding the minds of unbelievers which include family members, friends, and people that we meet.
When you pray the Word of God and target the areas that the enemy is attacking our loved ones in, it makes a tremendous difference. We are fighting an unseen spiritual realm, and we need to learn how to fight with the weapons that the Lord has given us. One of the most powerful of them all being the Sword of the Spriit or the Word of God!
