He that is in You is Greater-He lifts up a standard against the enemy!
The “He” that I am referencing in this article that is Greater than the enemy of this world is the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. He plays such a significant role in the life of every believer of Jesus Christ, and it is beneficial for us to understand and learn the ways that He guides and leads us. Unfortunately, a lot of us don’t fully comprehend how important it is to have an intimate relationship and connection with the Spirit of God.
We need to be able to hear His still small voice for so many reasons including: getting direction, getting corrected when we need it, getting guidance, and receiving warnings when the enemy is coming against us. The more that you spend time with the Lord in your secret place, the clearer His voice will become. Jesus Christ knew how much believers would need to lean on the Holy Spirit, so much so that He made a point to mention it in the book of John.
John 16:7 details, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” Here we can plainly see that the Lord Himself is disclosing to us the necessity of our Helper, the Holy Spirit. We can never forget that Jesus did not begin His Earthly ministry until the Spirit of God descended upon Him, Mark 1:9-11.
How much more do we need the leading and the guiding of our Helper that leads us into absolute truth, John 16:13. Another role that the Holy Spirit plays is empowering us to fulfill our role in the Kingdom of God. He will equip us with whatever we need to speak God’s Word boldly, witness to others, cast out devils, heal the sick, and raise the dead, Matthew 10:8.
The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the same Spirit living on the inside of us, Romans 8:11. That is absolute Holy Ghost power residing in each and every believer of Christ. We are never alone regardless of what storm we are facing; He is always right there with us. One of the things that He assists us with is warning and protecting us from danger.
Remember, our battle is not against flesh and blood but it is against a very powerful adversary and his demonic kingdom that wants to completely annihilate every one of us, Ephesians 6:10-12, John 10:10. The Holy Spirit is more powerful than Satan or any demon from hell and he will warn us when the unforeseen demonic realm is attempting to plot a scheme against us! In fact, He will hold up a standard against him!
Let’s take a look at the passage of Scripture that details exactly that.
Isaiah 59:19
“So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun; when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.”
Here we can see that the prophet Isaiah is declaring that the Name of the Lord will be feared regardless of whether a person believes in Him or not. The word “so shall they fear” being used here is the Hebrew word “yārē” which means: to fear, reverence, honor, and respect. One day every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, Philippians 2:10-11.
That is how powerful the Name of Jesus Christ is! God’s Spirit is equally as Powerful and has the ability to hold up a standard against the devil and his entire kingdom. The words “shall lift up a standard” being used in the primary passage of Scripture is the Greek word “nûs” which means: to flee, escape, and to put to flight. So, when you’re going through a trial or tribulation know that the Holy Spirit will help you flee, escape, and put to flight every demon that is wreaking havoc in your life.
Just think back to those times when something horrible should have happened to you, but it didn’t. Those nights when you were out late at night under the influence of alcohol, drugs, etc. and the Lord kept you safe! You should have been dead and gone, but God. We cannot see all of the times that the Holy Spirit lifted up a standard against the enemy and his demonic kingdom when they were attempting to take you out. We just don’t fully grasp the Powerful God that we serve!
That is why we often fight from a place of defeat, asking the Lord to please help us overcome and prevail. We plead with Him to take away the storm, the sickness, the disease, the pain, the affliction, etc. When the reality is that the Lord Jesus Christ already did everything for us on the Cross at Calvary when He stated, “It is finished!”
Yes, we are up against a powerful adversary that cannot be overpowered within our own strength, but He is a defeated foe. Jesus gave us the Power of the Holy Spirit to dwell on the inside of every one of us who believes in Him, and He has the ability to help you when the battle seems too much to bear.
He is our Helper (John 14:26) Who will help you prevail when it seems like the devil has your right where he wants you as he continually whispers lies in your ear. When the struggle seems all too real or when the doctor’s report causes your faith to waiver, God says I am with you in the storm and through the storm. I am the One that is going to provide you with a way of escape!
The devil is quick to take your adversity and apply pressure to it! He loves to knock you down during those moments of vulnerability when you’ve given all that you have but it doesn’t seem like it’s enough. Isaiah 59:19 is a reminder to us that the Lord will push back and take a stand for us when the enemy comes in like a flood! The victory is done through the Power of the Spirit of God helping you fight through.
However, the Lord did not once state that He would do it all for you. That is why He gave us His Word paired with the Holy Spirit that will bring those Scriptures to your remembrance. The Lord fought the devil with the Word, and we can find that in different passages where Jesus stated “It is written” when the enemy came against Him. How much more do we need to battle the devil with the Word of God. The thing is, if your Scriptural Memory Bank is empty, there are no Scriptures available for the Holy Spirit to bring to your remembrance.
It is vital that you read your Word daily and get the Scriptures engrained in your mind and heart. The Lord’s Word is powerful and sharper than a two-edged Sword (Hebrews 4:12) and has the ability to counterattack every arrow that the enemy throws your direction. He that is in a believer of Jesus Christ will always be greater than he that is in this world!
Conclusion:
Every person regardless of whether you are a believer or a non-believer is going to have to go through trials and tribulations. Christians are not exempt from being hit by the storms of life. The difference between a born-again believer and one that doesn’t believe is the fact that a believer has the Power of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of them.
When the devil thinks he has you right where he wants you and you have no more strength in you left to fight, God’s Spirit will lift up a standard against him. He will push back the enemy and his demonic kingdom letting him know that God has the final say. The Lord will never let you go through more than you can bear and will always provide you with a way of escape!
