Why Your Mountain Won’t Move-What is a “Mountain”

As believers of Jesus Christ we are not exempt from facing trials and tribulations and we can see that laid out clearly for us in Matthew 5:45 and it states, “That you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” We can determine by this passage that the Lord is disclosing to Christians that we are going to go through some things in life, there is no way of getting around it!

The Lord highlights the storms that we face through many passages of Scripture and in some cases, He calls them “mountains.” What exactly does the word mountain in these verses mean?  When we take a look at what mountain means in the webster’s dictionary we can see that it states that it is: a landmass that projects conspicuously above its surroundings and is higher than a hill. Another definition states that it is a great mass.

When we look at the word biblically, we can conclude that a mountain is directly correlated with something that is difficult to accomplish. In other words, it is an obstacle: sickness, disease, pain, financial pressure, fear, depression, oppression, etc. It is basically what is in the way of you walking in the Purpose that God has for your life.

However, we can take our authority in Christ and tell any mountain to move and get out of the way. Unfortunately, because so many born-again believers do not walk in their authority, the enemy takes full advantage of their lack of knowledge, 2 Corinthians 2:11. He knows that if he can convince us to come into agreement with his lies, then he can keep us bound.

Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary for our sickness, diseases, oppression, depression, and everything in between. He stated that it was “finished” meaning that He took care of anything that the devil will try to throw your way, but you have to believe by faith that any mountain can be moved!

God does not lie and He puts His Word above His Name, these are some very powerful truths. Let’s take a look at the two passages of Scripture that disclose this very thing. Numbers 23:19 details, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

The second one is found in Psalm 138:2 and it states, “I will worship toward Your holy temple, and praise Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth; for You have magnified Your word above all Your name.” God is giving us some amazing promises: He is saying that He does not lie and if it is in His Word then you can take it at face value. Not only that, but He places His Word above even His Name!

So why is it so difficult for us to believe that God’s promises are what He says they are? One of the main reasons that believers struggle to properly apply the Scriptures is because when the storms of life hit and we are in the middle of the tribulation and things are not looking good, we tend to panic and make decisions based off of our emotions instead of the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Trust and believe, I have been there on more than one occasion but as the Lord began to move in my life and my faith increased, I had to make a decision: either I am going to trust God or I’m not it is really that simple. His Word is absolute and will never be spoken out loud without accomplishing what it is meant to accomplish, Isaiah 55:11. That is a very powerful revelation!

Let’s take a look at a passage of Scripture that discloses how we make our mountain move!

Mark 11:23

“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”

Here we can see some facts being disclosed: first fact is the instruction of the word “say” is mentioned three times. Second fact: the word “doubt” is being used once and the word “believes” is being used once. What that means is that proclaiming to your mountain verbally is extremely important because it is mentioned three times.

Another fact that we can draw from this powerful verse of Scripture is that Jesus is stating that “whoever” can say to the mountain to move and it needs to move. You don’t have to wait for your pastor, family member, friend, etc. to do it for you, anyone has the authority as long as they are a believer of Jesus Christ.

Confessing God’s Word and His promises are so important when you are overcoming oppression, depression, sicknesses, diseases, or anything else! We learned earlier that God does not lie so if it is found in His Word and it is applied correctly, it will come to pass! The Lord made it clear in Proverbs 18:21 when it states, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

You have the choice to speak life (God’s Word) or death (the devil’s lies), but what you choose will directly affect the trajectory of your life. So, when the enemy attempts to afflict your mind, your body, your emotions, or afflicts you spiritually you need to have Scriptures on hand to counterattack the enemy because he will come against you. One significant verse that we can lean on is Psalm 34:19 as it reveals to us “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”

Two things to pay attention to from this passage, the first thing is the word “righteous” or right standing. The second thing to highlight is the word “ALL,” so what God is telling us that we are going to get afflicted because the rain falls on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45), but the Lord delivers us from them ALL. Not some, not maybe one or two, the Lord said ALL.

So, when the devil comes at your body with pain and torment you let him know that the Lord has ALREADY delivered you from anything and everything he attempts to bind you with! We need to get into the mindset that whatever we are attempting to overcome, Jesus already paid for it on the cross at Calvary. It is already done; we need to apply it to our lives by faith.

You don’t need to fear any mountain that is standing in the way of you and your destiny, you just need to speak to it and tell it to move and to get out of your way! Let’s take a closer look at the primary passage of Scripture that I am highlighting, Mark 11:23.

The words “shall doubt” being used here is the Greek word “diakrinō” which means: to be at variance with oneself, hesitate, and doubt. The word “believes” being used is the Greek word “pisteuō” which means: absolutely to trust in Jesus or God as able to aid either in obtaining or in doing something. There is so much knowledge given to us through this effective verse of Scripture.

We can conclude that Jesus is letting us know that speaking to the mountain with authority and no hesitancy or doubt paired with trusting the Lord entirely is what is going to get you results! We need to change our frame of mind thinking that we need to ask the Lord to move the mountain for us.

He is definitively saying that WE need to speak to the mountain ourselves with our own mouths. The Holy Spirit will give us direction, guidance, and the power to overcome any obstacle in our way, but He is not going to do it for us. Christ gave every believer the permission to SPEAK to the oppression, the depression, the sickness, the disease, and everything in between and tell it to BE GONE!

Conclusion:

One of the ways that the devil and his demonic kingdom like to keep Christians bound is by making us believe that we don’t have the right to speak to our mountain and tell it to move! He wants us to believe that the sickness or disease is just a “cross” that we have to carry. Or that maybe the Lord wants to teach us something through our struggles.

The devil is a liar! Over and over again you see throughout Scripture where Jesus is healing the sick, cleansing the lepers, raising the dead, and casting out demons, Matthew 10:8. In fact, the only time that the Word of God reveals that Jesus did not heal all the sick is pertaining to the ones that had unbelief, Matthew 13:58. Be bold, take your authority in Christ, and let the enemy know that your mountain WILL move today!
