Being sure of your Salvation-It’s in the Word of God
One of the most confusing thoughts in the minds of believers of Jesus Christ is the question “Am I really saved?” With so many different teachings, sermons, and doctrines it can get overwhelming. One thing that we know for sure beyond a shadow of a doubt is that Salvation is a free gift that you don’t have to work for to receive. Remember Ephesians 2:8 details, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
What we can determine from this powerful passage of Scripture written by the Apostle Paul is that we cannot receive salvation by anything that we do, will do, or have already done. It is a free gift from God and it is only through the atoning work of Lord Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary that we are even eligible for salvation to begin with, Ephesians 2:8.
Unfortunately many Christians don’t know the meaning of Salvation and don’t feel assured that they are truly saved. False preaching will lead you down the wrong path making things unclear and uncertain. When I don’t feel confident about a word that a pastor gave or something that I heard someone say, I go straight to the Word of God.
There are so many areas within the Scriptures that give us confidence in our Salvation. I am going to go over some of them in this article but before I do I want to make something very clear. There is no such thing as the doctrine that preaches “once saved, always saved” what that kind of thinking will do is cause you to be lead astray risking your chance at eternal life.
The moment that we become born again believers of Jesus Christ and are saved by grace through faith we become new creations. 2 Corinthians 5:17 details, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” What Paul is letting us know is the fact that once you become a Christian old things go away and you are a new person in Christ.
Meaning that you should want to change the way that you used to live, the way that you talk and behave should change, your love for people should change, and even the way that you dress in some cases should change. In other words you should strive to be more and more like Christ every single day. The Holy Spirit that lives on the inside of you will help you make these changes (John 16:13) you will not be alone.
The Lord expects us to get into His Word and renew our minds so that we can change our unfavorable behaviors and characteristics. He knows that we all have a sin nature and will fall short from time to time, Romans 3:23. However, He will not tolerate us as born again believers making a practice of habitual sin. Let me give you some examples of what I mean.
Matthew 7:23 reveals, “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” Jesus is giving us some very important information here when He mentions the word “practice” which is the Greek word “ergazomai” which means: exercise, perform, commit. What this is revealing to us is that you are intentionally committing the sin that you are practicing with no regard for the consequences.
Some more passages of Scripture that reiterate what Jesus is saying is found in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and Paul states, “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”
We can’t forget that God is speaking to believers of Jesus Christ in all of these verses of Scripture. The “once saved, always saved” doctrine teaches that once you’re saved you can live however you want with no consequences or repercussions and the Bible clearly does not say that. Don’t be deceived especially in these last of the last days, there will be doctrines of devils trying to sway you away from God, 1 Timothy 4:1.
Now that we have some things clarified let’s take a look at some verses of Scripture that disclose to us that you can be sure of salvation.
The assurance of Salvation
Acts 16:30-31 “And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Romans 10:9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
John 6:47 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.”
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Notice a pattern in all of these passages of Scripture. They all say words like “will be saved” and “has everlasting life.” What that tells us is that we can be assured that salvation will be obtained to those that believe but don’t stop there Romans 10:10 declares, “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness…”
The word “righteousness” being used is the Greek word “dikaiosynē” which means: in a broad sense, the state of him who is as he ought to be, righteousness, the condition acceptable to God. Once you receive the Spirit of God on the inside of you, He will convict you when you are doing the wrong things or veering off track.
At that moment it is really up to you whether or not you want to obey God’s still, small voice. One thing is certain you cannot live the same life that you lived before you became a born again believer if you want to stay connected to the Lord. Sin creates a barrier and a separation from you and God and that is why He warns us against it. God is patient, loving, kind, gracious, and merciful; however He is also a just Judge.
We never want to take advantage of the grace of God. The Apostle Paul sums it up perfectly in Romans 6:1 when he states, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” We can see that Paul is giving us a strong warning against living the way that you used to. As Christians we should want to strive to live upright in the eyes of God.
Now let’s take a look at some stipulations that need to be considered.
For instance:
John 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Mark 16:16 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
Taking a closer look at these passages of Scripture we can conclude that there are some stipulations that need to be taken seriously when it comes to the free gift of Salvation. The Lord is showing us that our belief has to be on the atoning work of Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross at Calvary.
When He rose from the dead on the third day, our assurance is that believers of Christ that have already passed away will also be risen from the dead and have eternal life. Those that are alive and remain will be caught up in the air to be with the Lord in Heaven, 1 Thessalonians 4:17. We also see that there are significant stipulations that are given to us including but not limited to: the wages of sin is death and those that do the will of God are the ones that will enter into Heaven.
We are human and will make mistakes along the way but one thing that you always want to check is your heart posture. Do you truly want to live your life for God to the best of your abilities? Are you submitting to the guidance and conviction of the Holy Spirit? Are you worshipping the Lord in Spirit and Truth? These are just some of the questions that you want to ask yourself keeping it 100 %.
Conclusion
One of the greatest gifts that the Lord Jesus Christ afforded us to have is the free gift of Salvation. When the veil that was separating the Holy of Holies from the rest of the Temple (Matthew 27:50-52) tore in two it signified reconciliation with God the Father. The Lord has always wanted to have a relationship with His children but we allow the things of the world to get in the way.
Make it a point to maintain intimacy with God ensuring that you are living your life upright in His eyes to the best of your ability. Salvation is a guarantee that Jesus Christ died for us to have but we have to make sure that we are not allowing ourselves to be distant or separated from God. Make the Lord a priority in your life and He will guide and lead you in the right direction every single time!
