Praying for your unsaved Loved Ones-Be a Doer of God’s Word

Make no mistake about it, the moment that you call yourself a Christian your unsaved loved ones will place your character under a microscope. What being a born-again believer means in their eyes is that you are supposed to be different than the people who are not believers of Christ. They would be right and that is an absolute fact.

Let’s take a look at a Bible verse that states this very thing. 2 Corinthians 5:17 details, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” What the Apostle Paul is revealing here is the undeniable fact that once you become a Christian you become an entirely different person. Everything that you used to be is now in the past: the old sin you were in, the way you used to cuss, your drinking habits, fornication, dressing provocatively, etc.

In other words, from the moment that you become a believer your life should begin to line up with the Word of God. When you are trying to spread the gospel of Christ to your family your greatest tool is your character and how you live now versus before you met Jesus. You best believe, the people around you will watch your every move and call you out on your mess when you do something contrary to what a Christian is supposed to do.

That is why it is imperative that you make sure that God is working in your life and there is evidence of it before you try to convert those around you. Otherwise, you will just bring confusion because you will be proclaiming on thing but doing another. James 1:8 details, “…a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” James is disclosing that you are to have your mind laser focused on the things of God and not the world.

We are supposed to meditate on the Word of God allowing it to transform our minds to be more like the mind of Christ, 1 Corinthians 2:16. So what does a transformed mind mean and what does being a doer of God’s Word actually look like? In order for us to fuller understand what James is referring to we need to take a closer look at the verse of Scripture that references it.

James 1:22

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

This verse of Scripture out of the book of James is giving us some very revealing information regarding being a doer of the Word versus just a hearer of the Word only. Putting this passage into context we need to take a look at what James had to say before he mentions this verse.

James 1:21 discloses “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” Here we can see that James is letting us know that the only way to get rid of the filth and wickedness found in your life is by implanting the Lord’s Word which will save your soul.

The reason why this is effective is because allowing the Word of God to saturate your heart and mind transforms the way that you think, Romans 12:2. The Holy Spirit will guide you and lead you the right direction using Scripture, John 16:13. Within our own selves and in our own power it would be almost impossible to remain a doer of God’s Word. That is why the Spirit of God is so critical to the life of every believer of Jesus Christ.

Remember, it all begins with you giving your life to Jesus Christ, then allowing His Word to transform your life, then you can help the people around you do the same. It is one thing to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, but it is an entirely different thing to actually apply it to your daily life. You will be a more powerful witness if your loved can see the conversion from the old you to the new you!

What they say is so true: actions speak so much louder than words. The person that you are evangelizing to will not take you seriously if your actions are not aligning with the words that you are declaring. This will become extremely confusing to a person that is unsure of Who Jesus is let alone understand the free gift of salvation.

Let’s take a look at another Bible verse that breaks down what it really means to be a doer of God’s Word.

Romans 12:1

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

In this passage of Scripture, Paul is addressing the church in Rome, and he is letting them know about the sacrifices that need to be made in order to be holy and acceptable to God. The word “holy” being used here is the Greek word “hagios” which means: pure, sinless, and upright. Your body must be in full surrender to what the will for God is for your life.

So what exactly does it mean to have your body in full surrender to the Lord? To break it down even further let’s take a look at some other passages of Scripture found in the book of Colossians. Colossians 3:5-6 reveals, “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.  Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience.”

Here the Apostle Paul is saying that we are to put to death or take control of our body (your flesh) and turn away from those evil things that grieve the Holy Spirit. All of these characteristics are resembling the characteristics of the devil but as a believer you are now a child of God. We need to make sure that we fully understand what being a representative of Jesus Christ looks like.

It is very hard to witness to your family members while living in full blown willful sin. They will look at you like you are crazy! That is why a lot of times you will hear children that come from a Christian home wanting to have nothing to do with the Lord. Why? They see their parents saying that they are Christians playing “church” on Sunday but when they get home, they live just like the World does.

God is very clear when He states in 2 Corinthians 6:17 “Therefore “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord…” As born-again believers of Jesus Christ we are to be separate from the world and their worldly ways and have nothing to do with darkness rather we are supposed to be exposing it, Ephesians 5:11! We are to walk as the light of the world shining bright in the midst of darkness.

Conclusion

Before the Lord ascended to be with our Heavenly Father He gave us the Great Commission to make disciples to everyone that we meet which included teaching them everything that the Lord has taught us. Unfortunately, a lot of Christians are not living obedient lives which in turn hinders their witness for Christ.

One of the worst things that you can do is be a hearer of God’s Word only but disregarding what the Scriptures say about how to live your life as a believer of Jesus Christ. Remember, for you to powerfully minister to your unsaved loved ones, the Lord must be actively working through you. This will be evident in the way that you walk, talk, act, think, and live!
