Praying for your unsaved Loved Ones-Believing God’s Promises
What is Salvation?
So what exactly does Salvation mean? Salvation takes place when you confess with your mouth that you are a sinner and are in need of a Savior Romans 10:9-10. It is imperative that you not only accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior but acknowledge that His death, burial, and resurrection completely paid for your sin debt in full allowing you to have the free gift of eternal life and salvation!
If the Lord had not followed through with sacrificing His life for you and me, the result would have been everlasting separation from God. Now because of Christ we have hope that there is a life after this one for every believer, Jesus has already prepared a place for us, John 14:3. Make no mistake at all, there is only One Way to get to into heaven, One Way to have a relationship with the Heavenly Father, and One Way for salvation and that is through the Lord Jesus Christ, John 14:5-7.
One of the most powerful passages of Scripture that describes Salvation is found in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” One of the best gifts that any person could ever receive is the free gift of Salvation.
It is not something that can be earned, but it is something that was paid for in full by the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on Calvary’s cross. He died so that every single one of us would have the opportunity to live an eternal life with Him in heaven.
Unfortunately, there are so many people that are not saved and a lot of them are our family members. The Lord expects born again believers to pray without ceasing, 1 Thessalonians 5:17. What that means is that we are to come to Him in prayer continually especially when it comes to the salvation of our loved ones. We are commanded to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone around us, Matthew 28:19-20.
The Gospel literally means “the Good News” but if it is such great news why are we so hesitant to share it especially with the people that we love? One of the main reasons this happens is because the enemy will place doubt in our minds regarding whether the person that you have been diligently praying for can really get saved. That doubt then turns into unbelief which creates faithless prayers.
The devil is a liar and the father of lies, John 8:44. He wants you to think that your prayers are not being heard and that your family member is too far gone for salvation. That is so far from the case! God doesn’t want to see anyone go to hell and He expects us to pray for our loved ones, co-workers, neighbors, even strangers to get saved. Eternal separation from God is not the destiny that you want for anyone and particularly the people that you care about.
I am going to go over some tips that you can use to help you pray for people to receive the free gift of Salvation.
Believe for your family’s Salvation
When it comes to the Salvation of our loved ones, we often make the mistake of not believing what we are praying for. We say that we want our family to get saved but do we truly believe that they can? The word of God is very clear when it states in Acts 16:30-31 “And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Not only is the free gift of Salvation given to any person that asks but the Lord is also making sure that we know that the offer of Salvation is for our entire household. It then boils down to whether you take the Lord’s Word at face value or not. As believers of Jesus Christ it is our responsibility to diligently pray for the Salvation of our family members, friends, co-workers, and even strangers.
Let’s take a look at two other passages of Scripture that give us insight on having full assurance in God’s Word. Mark 11:22-24 details “So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.”
The words “not doubt” being used here is the Greek word “diakrinō” which means: nothing doubting, wholly free from doubt. The word “believe” being used here is the Greek word “pisteuō” which means: to trust in Jesus or in God as able to aid either in obtaining or in doing something. So, when we break down these two powerful words we can see that the Lord is revealing to us that we are to believe wholeheartedly with no doubting that He is able to help us receive what we are asking Him for.
As long as what you are requesting from Him aligns with His Word He will help you move that mountain out of the way. Let’s take a deeper look into what the word mountain means. It is the Greek word “oros” which means: to accomplish most difficult, stupendous, and incredible things. Bringing a family member to Jesus Christ can feel like moving a mountain. If they are living in sin and don’t want to hear anything about Jesus Christ it is our job to intercede on their behalf regardless of how difficult it may seem.
Another passage of Scripture that describes moving a mountain is found in Matthew 17:20 and it states, “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” Here we can see the same meaning of the word mountain being used.
The Lord is reiterating the fact that unbelief is one of the main reasons why you don’t see your prayers being answered. Then He goes on to say that having faith (belief) as small as a mustard seed can move a mountain out of the way. When you pray for a person’s salvation you want to pray from a place of belief and not from a place of doubt.
Another example of what happens when you have doubt and unbelief in your heart is found in James 1:6-7. It states, “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord.”
Here we can see that the Lord is clear that we are to ask Him in faith with absolutely no doubt because a person that doubts should not expect to receive anything form the Lord. God wants us to continually increase our faith and it should not ever remain stagnant. Why is it critical to have faith in the first place? The fact is that without having faith it is impossible to please God, Hebrews 11:6.
The passage also details that those that believe that God is Whom He says He is will be rewarded for diligently seeking Him. One of the rewards that the Lord gives those that come to Him in absolute faith are answered prayers. As long as they do not go against God’s Word we can have whatever it is that we are asking Him for. We must walk by faith and not walk by sight or by what things may look like on the outside, 2 Corinthians 5:7. We serve a mighty God!
We have to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Lord wants every single person, no matter who it is, to be saved. Jesus Christ died a painful death on the Cross at Calvary so that our sin debt would be paid in full thus allowing us the opportunity to have the free gift of Salvation. This includes every member of your family, friends, and strangers that you meet every single day.
What does God have to say about Salvation?
A lot of times doubt and unbelief regarding the salvation of others stems from the uncertainty of what God’s opinion is about salvation. If you are ever unsure about the salvation of your loved one, the best passage of Scripture to meditate on is found in 2 Peter 3:9. It states, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
Here we can definitively see that the Lord is wanting “ALL” to come to repentance and wants nobody to perish. In those moments when it seems like the Lord is not answering your prayers regarding your loved one’s salvation be sure of His stance on it. He wants every single one of us to be in Heaven with Him irrespective of who it is or what they have done!
Continue to pray for your family members without ceasing, 1Thessalonians 5:17. Remember a lot of them have their hearts hardened by the enemy and by the things of this world. I would suggest praying that the Lord would soften their hearts toward Him and turn their hearts of stone into hearts of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26 details, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
Remember there is nothing too difficult or impossible for the Lord, Luke 1:37. If you have even the slightest bit of faith you can tell whatever mountain is blocking your loved one and their salvation to MOVE and get out of the way! The key is to believe in your heart the words that you are proclaiming out of your mouth!
Conclusion
One of the greatest gifts that the Lord gave His life for us to have is the gift of salvation. Often times we don’t see the importance of interceding for our loved ones, but it is one of the things that ever believer should be doing daily. Time is so short right now and the Lord is coming at any moment. The last thing that you want for anyone that you truly love is for them to experience eternal separation from God.
One of the crucial things that you want to ensure that you are doing as you pray is believing the prayers that you are declaring. Remember, our lives here on earth is going to pass by before we know it. If you are a believer of Jesus Christ one of your commandments is to spread the gospel “Good News” to everyone that you meet because their eternal life depends on it!
