Repentance-In the Eyes of the Apostle Paul
Who exactly was the Apostle Paul?
Paul whose birth name was originally Saul, was a Jew from the lineage of the house of Benjamin born in Tarsus in Cilicia, Philippians 3:5-6. His parents were Pharisees who obeyed the Law of Moses faithfully and viewed Jerusalem as a sacred and holy place. In his youth, he was taught by a rabbi named Gamaliel and mastered the Jewish history and how to fully articulate the Scriptures. Acts 22:3 details, “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers’ law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today.”
He was fully committed to the Jewish law as we can see revealed to us in Philippians 3:5 and it states, “Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee.” In those days a severe persecution went out against the church in Jerusalem as detailed in Acts 8:1, “At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.”
Paul, then Saul, was right in the middle of it all encouraging the persecution of Christians and went so far as to help hold the garments of those that were stoning and killing believers, Acts 7:58. In his mind he believed that he was doing a great and mighty thing for God by coming against followers of Jesus Christ. He began to ravage the houses of Christians, dragging them out, and taking them to prison for their beliefs, Acts 8:3.
It wasn’t until he had a mighty encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus that he knew the consequences of what he was doing. Acts 9:3 details, “As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” It was in that moment that Saul (Paul) knew that he was actually coming against the Lord and not doing God’s will.
He was blinded for three days with no food or water, Acts 9:9. He was told to meet with one of Jesus’ disciples Ananias so that he could receive prayer and restore his sight. The scales fell from his eyes and he was able to see clearly knowing that Jesus Christ was indeed the Messiah and the people that he was persecuting were His believers.
After that encounter, his name became Paul (representing humility) from then on and was a mighty warrior for Jesus Christ.
Paul preaches to the Nations
One thing that we know beyond a shadow of a doubt is that Paul’s conversion from being a persecutor of those that followed Christ to following Christ himself was nothing short of a miracle. When the Lord revealed to him what he was doing and lifted the scales from his eyes, it set the Apostle Paul on fire and he never looked back. He was personally chosen to be used mightily by Jesus, Acts 9:16.
One of the things that he preached on was the importance of repentance and turning away from your old, wicked ways. Acts 20:18-21 details, “And when they had come to him, he said to them: “You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”
There is so much to unpack from these passages of Scripture but one of the main takeaways is that Paul preached repentance to both the Jews and the Greeks. He knew that living a life in willful sin would allow the enemy to have a legal right in the lives of God’s people. That is why it was significant that not only the Jews but also the Gentile nations grabbed a hold of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul was used by the Lord to reach Jews and Gentiles in a massive way.
We can also see the mission that the Lord set before Paul to proclaim the Gospel to Gentiles in Galatians 1:15-16 as it reveals, “But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles…” We can also find his assignment detailed in Acts 13:47 as it states, “For so the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
This was not going to be any easy task as the Gentile nations did not believe that Jesus Christ was the only true God but believed in many gods. He was going to have to bypass their carnal thinking and preach to them the Gospel of Christ as the final authority. However, the Apostle Paul was the perfect person for the challenge: he was Jewish and trained as a Pharisee, so he had a clear understanding of the Law, he was from Tarsus and spoke Greek allowing him to comfortably speak to the Gentile nations as well as the Romans as Greek was the common language spoken.
Needless to say, the Apostle Paul was fully equipped for the task at hand and so after his intense conversion he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus was the Lord of all. The next thing that needed to be done was to preach repentance to both the Jews and the Gentiles nations around the world. That is exactly what Paul did!
Paul’s message of repentance
One of Apostle Paul’s primary messages was the message of repentance. Turning away from the old you and living a life Holy and acceptable to God. Romans 12:1-2 is very revealing as it states, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
It is an absolute must that we renew our minds with the Word of God so that the Scriptures can penetrate our hearts overriding our desire to sin. Paul understood the sin nature that lives on the inside of every one of us. We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23. He would have to put his flesh under submission to his spirit and gives us a detailed account of why that is so important for believers to do.
Romans 7:14-25 discloses to us some powerful revelation as it states, “For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
The Apostle Paul knew through personal experience that the only way a person can live a life that was pleasing to God abiding by His Law is if they were fully surrendered to Christ and what He did on the cross at Calvary. His message of repentance was necessary, and he wanted to share it with every person that he came across, and the Lord expects us to do the same!
Some passages of Scripture that show us Paul’s message of repentance:
Acts 17:30-31 “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”
Acts 20:21 “Testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Acts 26:20 “but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.”
2 Corinthians 7:10 “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.”
2 Corinthians 12:21 “Lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and I shall mourn for many who have sinned before and have not repented of the uncleanness, fornication, and lewdness which they have practiced.”
2 Timothy 2:25 “In humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth.”
Conclusion:
When a person becomes a believer of Jesus Christ the next step should always be to repent and turn from the old you and all things should become brand new. The way that you walk, talk, think, and act should all be completely transformed through the power of the Holy Spirit. It will not happen overnight as it will be a different process for every person.
What you want to make sure of is that you are attempting to live your life for Christ renewing your mind with the Word of God daily. In order for your life to be transformed you have to be willing to die to yourself, pick up your cross, and follow Christ being Holy as He is Holy (1 Peter 1:16) and obeying His commandments knowing that everyone that states they love Him will do so, John 14:15.
