5 Powerful scriptures that will help you overcome strongholds!

Whether you are a believer or a nonbeliever, you are going to come against opposition, it is unavoidable. The biggest lie of the enemy is that he does not exist and he will use that scheme against you if you allow him to. So what exactly is a stronghold? A stronghold is anything that has an overpowering grip in any area in your life and no matter what you do; you just cannot find a way to breakthrough. It’s as if the devil has built a wall around you.

One of the main ways that strongholds develop is by practicing sin. The more that you engage in activities that the Lord explicitly forbids us not to engage in, the more of a legal right the devil and his demons have to come in and establish strong holds. They are just waiting for you to open up the door and let them in. If you come into agreement with the thoughts that they plant in your head about being fearful, anxious, doubtful, or any other adverse emotion, they will manipulate your vulnerability in the hopes to ensnare you!

We have to remember the battleground is always going to be in your mind so what you allow to take residence in your thought process will ultimately determine the level that each stronghold will take root. It is imperative that you study and read your Bible; we are to remain vigilant (1 Peter 5:8) and proactive, ready to counteract those thoughts with the Word of God.

The devil and his minions love to shoot flaming arrows at your head, thoughts like:

·         You will never be good enough.

·         The Lord could never love you; look at what you’ve done.

·         You’re not worthy enough to call yourself a child of God.

·         If the Lord loved you, you wouldn’t be going through what you are going through.

·         You are not strong enough to overcome that obstacle so why even try.

·         Come on you know you want to smoke, drink, do drugs, etc.

The list goes on and on with the lies that the enemy uses to cripple the lives of the believer. He wants to make sure that you are stopped from walking in the calling that the Lord has for you but the devil is a liar and the father of lies, John 8:44. Don’t think that Satan is not going to do everything in his power to make sure that you don’t live for the Lord, grow in the things of the Lord, and strengthen your relationship with the Lord.

He will consistently throw darts of deceit in the form of thoughts at your mind so much so that you actually begin to believe that they are really yours. That is why it is so important to get into the Word of God so that you can have arsenal at your disposal ready to fight back when the devil tries to use his devices against you.

Your double-edged Sword is powerful and can diminish and extinguish any strong hold that the enemy would ever try place you in. I am going to go over 5 of the most powerful warfare Scriptures to combat strongholds down below.

For more Warfare Scriptures that you need in your arsenal, please read my blogs: Spiritual Warfare Scriptures: Facing Life’s Battles-Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5. You will not be disappointed!

2 Corinthians 10:4-5

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

These are some of the most powerful warfare scriptures that you could have in your armory. Breaking down these verses we are to understand that we are fighting against the devil and his minions and not against the actual person that the devil is using against you. It does nothing for you to try to get angry at your spouse, your family member, or your friend because of something they said or did to you.

You have to come to the realization that life is spiritual and your real enemy is someone that you cannot see with the naked eye. He will use your loved ones to try to get under your skin in the hopes that he can cause you to develop anger and animosity. Once the devil and his demons can do that, they now have the legal access that you just gave them to turn your anger and animosity into bitterness and hate.

That is when you really begin to develop strongholds that threaten to create barriers in your relationship with the Lord (Hebrews 12:15), hinder your prayers (Psalm 66:18), prevent you from receiving forgiveness (Matthew 6:14) and many other hurdles that you don’t want to have to deal with.

You have to make sure that you pull down any unwanted and unfavorable thought that pushes its way into your mind creating negativity. If you allow them to linger, they will create strongholds that will mess with your joy, peace, and happiness which is one of the tactics that the enemy uses over and over again. Hold those thoughts captive and don’t let the devil gain any kind of foothold, Ephesians 4:27.

Romans 8:37

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

The Apostle Paul is writing this letter to the Church at Rome. He is giving them encouragement letting them know that there is not one thing that can come between them and the love of Christ. He was preparing them knowing that they were going to face persecution, trouble, and hardship just as he did.

The key takeaway that he wanted them to remember was that they were more than conquerors through Jesus Christ. It doesn’t matter what you are facing in life today, the fact that you are a child of the living God means that you have the tools that you need to overcome and succeed.

The enemy is going to try every opportunity that he can to detour you from the calling that God has for your life. You have to keep pressing forward knowing that the Lord is always by your side helping you through.

The devil loves to use our vulnerable moments to instill fear, doubt, unbelief, and worry when tribulation hits. Romans 8:39 states, “neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Paul is making it abundantly clear that there is nothing in this world that will separate us from God’s love.

So, when the enemy tries to plant thoughts in your mind in the hopes that he can establish strongholds, you need to remind him Who you belong to. You were bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20), co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17), and the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives on the inside of you (Romans 8:11).

You mean so much to God! He has given us the authority to trample on all powers of the enemy, Luke 10:19. We need to realize that and walk in the power that Christ died for every single one of us to have! You aren’t just a conqueror; you are more than a conqueror through Him who loved us!

2 Timothy 1:7

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

God does not want us to live a life of defeat; He wants us to live our lives powerfully and with a comprehensive mind. It is easy to feed your fears when that is all that is entrenched in your thoughts. God is making it clear for us that He did not give us the spirit (demonic spirit) of fear, which is not part of His character.

The Holy Spirit is the One that is going to give you power, boldness, confidence, and fierceness to combat that tormenting spirit of fear, Zechariah 4:6. This negative emotion is one of the most crippling feelings that the devil uses against us over and over again. It stops us from wanting to move forward, it allows other strongholds to be developed like doubt, unbelief, anxiety, and many others.

We will all have to face fearful situations in our lives but it is how we respond to them that will make the difference. You have to combat those overpowering emotions of fear with scripture because that is the Only Truth and that is what will make you free, John 8:32.

God is absolute love (1 John 4:16) and He wants nothing more for His children then for us to live a life in abundance, John 10:10. When we can rest in the assurance of the love that God has for us, His promise to us is that His perfect love will cast out all fear, 1 John 4:18. It is absolutely critical that we digest the Lord’s Word daily because this is what is going to prevent those strongholds from taking root. I go into complete detail of how we are to maintain a sound mind filled with love and embedded in power in my blog: The Holy Spirit-The Spirit of Power, Love, and a Sound Mind.

1 Corinthians 10:13

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

It is inevitable we are all going to be tempted by one thing or another. Trust and believe the enemy is not going to tempt you with something unless he knows it is one of your weaknesses. He has monitoring demonic spirits watching what we do, gathering information, and listening for the things that we say. They are looking for ways that they can legally create chaos in our lives.

Paul writes to the Church at Corinth that God is faithful and will make a way for you to escape. The moment that you became a Christian, the Holy Spirit came to dwell on the inside of you. He is the One that is going to help you stay on the right path guiding you into all truth, John 16:13. He will give you that nudge in your spirit when you’re doing something contrary to the Lord’s Word that can possibly lead you into temptation.

The Sprit of God is often times underestimated and misunderstood as far as the vital role that He plays in the lives of every believer. We need to learn to listen for that still small voice. Another thing that we must do is remain vigilant, watching, and praying because our flesh is continually weak but the Word of God says that our spirit (spirit man where the Spirit of God dwells) is willing, Matthew 26:41.

The Lord has given us scriptures like these to battle against the devil with when we are enticed to do something that is going to hinder our walk with Christ.  He has and will continue to make a way of escape, submit to God and the devil will flee, James 4:7. Always keep in mind, the more you follow the Lord and His ways the easier it will be to prevent strongholds from developing.

Romans 10:17

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

It is extremely imperative that you build your Faith, but how do you do that? This authoritative verse right here tells you how, by hearing a Word from God. The word “word” used in this verse of Scripture is pertaining to the Greek word rhema which means a spoken word.

You can receive this kind of revelation from the Lord in many ways including: while reading the Lord’s Word, a Pastor can be giving a sermon that the Lord is using to speak to you, the Lord can give a person a message to give directly to you pertaining to a situation, and many other ways.

The reason why this is so significant when it comes to overcoming strongholds is because these spoken words that the Lord uses build tremendous faith. You begin to trust that God is exactly Who He says He is making it easier to stand on His promises.

You will start to marinate on Scripture as the absolute truth because that is what it is. They will begin to marinate in your spirit giving the Holy Spirit more verses to bring to your remembrance when you need them to fight against the schemes of the enemy. He wants to control your mind that is why strongholds are so hard to overcome. You know you don’t want to continue to sin, but your mind keeps feeding you those compulsory thoughts in the hopes to keep you bound.

You can overcome the strongholds in your life but it will take effort on your part. Make it a point to read your Word daily and engrain the scriptures in your heart and mind so that you have artillery to combat the devil and his demons. I had to learn this lesson the hard way but once the Holy Spirit helped me understand how powerful the Word of God is (Hebrews 4:12) I began to devour it!

They do not call it your double-edged Sword for no reason. The more of God’s Word that you have in your spirit, the more liberty you can expect to achieve. I was completely set free from the heavy demonic strongholds that the devil had me in and if He can do it for me, He can do it for you too! These five dominant verses are a great place to start!
