The Power of the Cross of Christ-Righteousness by Faith
The definition of righteousness in the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary is: the quality or state of being righteous, conformity to the divine or moral law. We can definitely see similarities in the biblical definition and the definition found in the dictionary. We can determine that this description is disclosing the importance of following divine moral law.
The Word “righteousness” when pertaining to the New Testament is the Greek word “dikaiosynē” which means: the state of him who is as he ought to be. Righteousness, the condition acceptable to God. It also means: having integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking, feeling, and acting. It has to do with living your life in a way the lines up with the Word of God including your thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
That is why Romans 12:2 is so significant and it states, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” The Apostle Paul is revealing to us the way that we are able to keep our minds lined up with the Lord’s will for our lives. When we stray away from His Word, that is what allows the world to influence the way that we think, feel, and act.
One thing that we need to make sure that we understand is the fact that the state of righteousness that is acceptable to the Lord cannot be obtained within our own righteousness. Isaiah 64:6 breaks that down for us as it states, “But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags…” There is only one way that we can achieve righteousness in the eyes of Lord and that is putting our faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ because that is what paid our sin penalty in full allowing us to be in right standing with God.
The Word of God details the fact that righteousness must come through faith in Jesus to all of those that believe in Him. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but we are justified through the redemption found in Jesus Christ. The shed blood of Christ satisfied the righteous wrath of God against the sins that we committed because it atoned for them making reconciliation with the Lord a possibility.
Those that put their faith in Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross at Calvary are washed of all sin just as if it never happened, Romans 3:21-26. Our belief in Jesus is what keeps us in right standing with the Lord, so when He sees us, He doesn’t see us, but He sees His Son. Galatians 2:20 reveals, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
The Word of God reveals to us in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” What the Apostle Paul is disclosing to every believer of Jesus Christ is the fact that we are born-again, new creations and have the ability to renew our entire frame of mind. All of our sins are washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ because of what He did for us on the cross at Calvary.
Regardless of the person that you were, you are no longer who you used to be. God is very clear in Romans 8:1 and it states, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” This powerful passage of scripture is letting us know that those that are walking upright in the eyes of the Lord, should not feel condemned (disapproval or blame).
The devil is quick to remind you of your past and that is why it is imperative to stand by faith knowing that you are in right standing in the eyes of the Lord. Your faith will quench the fiery darts of the enemy. Let’s take a look at some passages of Scripture that reveal to us the importance of claiming your righteousness by faith!
Romans 1:16-17
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
The Apostle Paul is disclosing to us some very significant truths and that is that we should never be ashamed of the gospel (the good news) of Jesus Christ. The amazing news of the gospel is the fact that because of what Jesus did for us on the cross at Calvary, those that believe in Him by faith receive eternal life. What an amazing benefit that the Lord has afforded believers to have!
There is no greater feeling than to know that you saved by faith through Christ and not because of anything we have done but because of what Jesus did for us. We can never underestimate the power of the cross of Christ. The word power being used in these passages of Scripture is the words “the power” being used here is the Greek word “dynamis” which means: God’s saving power.
The reason why this is so important to understand is because the enemy is very crafty and slick and will try to make you believe that you aren’t truly saved. He will make you feel like your past and the person that you were was so far gone that there is no way that the Lord can use you. These are lies from the pit of hell!
Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44) and there is absolutely no truth in him. So what he will try to do is make you feel unworthy to be a son or daughter in the kingdom of God. He will continually bring up your past and the sin that you lived in prior to becoming a believer of Jesus Christ.
Faith tells us what Jesus did for us is enough to wash us clean and make us brand new. It wipes out all accusations against us that were previously used by the enemy. The righteousness that we obtain is because of Jesus Christ and his death, burial, and resurrection on the cross at Calvary. He paid the full sin debt for all of humanity.
However, we need to make sure that we take a closer look at the second Scripture that I am highlighting in the book of Romans 1:17 and it reads “For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
As we break down this verse of Scripture, we can determine that the Apostle Paul is revealing to us that God’s process of righteousness through Jesus Christ is disclosed to us through the gospel. As we place our faith in Jesus and what He did for us that is how we become justified (legally righteous) before the Lord.
As we live our Christian lives, the same faith that allowed us to attain salvation is the same faith that should continue throughout our walk as believers (faith to faith). Another important part of this verse of Scripture has to do with the word “just” which is the Greek word “dikaios” which means: approved of God, acceptable to God.
So, what Paul is unveiling to us through this powerful passage of Scripture is the fact that those that are studying to show themselves approved to God living a life that is pleasing to Him are doing it by faith. Faith in the Lord, faith in what Jesus Christ did on the cross at Calvary, faith in the Word of the God, and faith that the Holy Spirit will lead you to absolute truth in everything that you do, John 14:26.
This is what is going to help you refrain from doing the things that are not acceptable to the Lord. The reason why this is so significant is because the accuser of the brethren accuses us day and night. Revelation 12:10 details, “…for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.”
The devil’s accusations are only valid when it is something that you have actually done. That is why the cross of Jesus Christ is so powerful because it gives us the power and authority to overcome the schemes and wiles that the enemy tries to entangle us with! When we stand by faith knowing that the lies that Satan is shooting at our minds is just that…LIES, we can overcome every attack!
Jeremah 29:11 sums it up so powerfully as the prophet proclaims, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Anything contrary to that is the work of the enemy and he is liar and the father of it, John 8:44!
Conclusion:
What Jesus did on the cross at Calvary is much more powerful than we can even comprehend. One of the primary benefits that believers of Christ get to partake in is having their sins wiped clean and being in right standing with God the Father. It has nothing to do with anything that we have done but has everything to do with what Christ did for us!
As we stand in faith believing that Jesus’ resurrection is allowing those that believe to live for eternity. That is the “good news” of the gospel of Jesus Christ and should be spread to every person that you know! There is no better feeling than knowing who you are in Christ and knowing Whom you belong to!
