The Ministry of the Holy Spirit-Convicts of Sin

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, but they are all equally God. He is a Person with emotions, mind, and a will, John 16:13, and is just as much God as the Father and the Son Acts 5:3-4.

Some of the Holy Spirit’s roles are: our Helper, Teacher, Guide, Revelator, Administer, Intercessor, Comforter, Counselor, convicts of sin, judgment, and righteousness, He gives you power and boldness to accomplish God’s will for your own life, and He glorifies Jesus and Jesus alone, and many other things.

It is through the Holy Spirit that we are born again, John 3:5-8. He is so vital to our walk as Christians, and it is impossible to make it through the trials and tribulations that you will face without His help and guidance.

I know for me when I was going through the dark period in my life when I was getting demonically attacked and didn’t know how I was going to make it through; it was the Holy Spirit that was teaching and guiding me out of the pit that I was in. It was through the power of the Spirit of God that I was able to overcome the enemy and his demonic kingdom, Acts 1:8.

I had no knowledge of the spiritual realm or spiritual things and didn’t know what I had gotten myself into or how powerful the enemy actually is. The Holy Spirit taught me how to battle the devil one on one using my Sword which is the Word of God, Hebrews 4:12.

During the ministry of Jesus Christ, He relied solely on God’s Spirit to guide and direct Him and He never left His side, Acts 10:37-38. We have to do the same if we are going to avoid the snares, schemes, and devices of our adversary the devil. He is a roaring lion consistently looking for someone to devour, 1 Peter 5:8.

In this article, I am going to highlight one of the most significant roles that the Holy Spirit plays, and that is that He convicts us of sin. Let’s take a look at some passages of Scripture that reveal to us that the Holy Spirit convicts us and guides us into absolute Truth!

John 16:7-8

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”

As we dissect these powerful verses, we can see that Jesus Himself is revealing to us that it is to our advantage that He go away and the Holy Spirit is sent to us. Then He goes into even more detail as to one of the main roles of the Spirit of God when He states that “…He will convict the world of sin…”

Why is this necessary for a believer of Jesus Christ? If we did not have the Holy Spirit to guide us into absolute Truth, we wouldn’t know when we are veering off course. Without that still small voice letting us know that what we are doing is not pleasing to the Lord, a lot of believers would not know when we are grieving the Lord.

I know I can testify about how the Spirit of God was such a significant factor in my sanctification process. He led me every step of the way and convicted me of sin when I needed correction. What this did was shut the door to the devil and his demonic kingdom preventing him from having a place in my life.

There are many ways that the enemy can create a place in your life, but the primary reason is through willful sin! Romans 6:23 is very clear when Paul states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The word “wages” being used here is the Greek word “opsōnion” which means: wages, the hire that sin pays. In other words, your sinful actions are increasing your sin wages leading to death (spiritual and physical).

That is why the role that the Holy Spirit plays regarding correction of sin is so vital to our lives. It is a barometer that indicates when we are heading in the wrong direction. It is in our best interests to always take heed to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Not only will He guide us into absolute Truth, but He will also give us spiritual discernment regarding all situations.

Sin is a factor in every single person regardless of how upright they claim to be, and there are several passages of Scripture that disclose this very thing. Romans 3:23 details, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Another significant verse of Scripture is found in 1 John 1:8 and it states, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

What the Lord is pointing out in these passages is that we were all born with the sin nature with the proclivity to sin. That is why when we become born again, the free gift which is the Holy Spirit comes in and dwells on the inside of us, John 14:17. He is that still small voice telling us when we need to change the path that we are heading in!

Conclusion:

Make no mistake about it, the ministry of the Holy Spirit is essential in the life of every believer of Jesus Christ! He is the One that will guide us and lead us to absolute Truth and bring Scriptures to our remembrance when we need them the most. He will put a check in your spirit if something just isn’t right.

Another significant role that He plays is that He convicts the entire world of sin. The reason why this is critical is because the devil is here to steal, kill, and destroy, John 10:10. The primary way that he does that is through our willful and unrepentant sin!
