The Righteousness of Christ

Righteousness Through Jesus Christ

The word “righteousness” simply put means: the condition acceptable to God pertaining to integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking, feeling, and acting. It is a person living a life that lines up with the Word of God including the rules and regulations that He has commanded us to abide by.

Now that we have an understanding of what the word righteousness means, one thing that we need to make sure that we understand is the fact that uprightness cannot be obtained within our own deeds. The only righteousness that the Lord accepts is through the Lord Jesus Christ.

It is only through faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and what He did for us on the cross that we are treated as righteous, Romans 3:22. When the Lord paid the entire sin debt for all of humanity, those that are believers have their sin wiped away as if it was never there. This brought reconciliation back to God the Father, Romans 5:1.

The Lord knows that we all fall short of the glory of God and are in need His grace and mercy. Being in right standing in the eyes of the Lord does not mean that you will have to be flawless, but it does mean that you will strive to live your life in a way that is pleasing to the Lord. Christ became the perfect Sacrifice, so now it’s up to us to do our part in abiding by His Commandments.

Romans 6:13 details this fact perfectly as Paul states, “Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.”

Paul is revealing to us that we no longer have to live a life of darkness being used by the enemy, but now that we are born again believers of Christ, we should want to be used as vessels displaying integrity and purity. It is no longer you that should be visible but Christ that is within you, Galatians 2:20.

Let’s take a look at a passage of Scripture that discloses how it is only through Jesus Christ that we can be in right standing with God.

2 Corinthians 5:21

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Breaking down this passage of Scripture, we can see that Paul is revealing a very important fact, and that is that Jesus Christ had no sin but became sin for us. What we do know is that God required a perfect sinless sacrifice to atone for the sin of all of humanity. The only One that was qualified to take on that role was His Son Jesus Christ. He was perfect in all of His ways

The Old Testament sacrificial system (animal sacrifice) could not permanently remove sin but only temporally atone for it. This was only a shadow of what was to come and that was Jesus Christ shedding His innocent blood on the cross at Calvary as the spotless sacrificial Lamb. This provided the once and for all payment for all sins, eliminating the need for repeated sacrifices.

As we continue analyzing the Scripture we see that Paul discloses another significant truth and one of the main reasons that Christ took on our sin for us and that is so that we could become the righteousness of God. Let’s take a deeper look into what that actually means.

The words “the righteousness” being used there is the Greek word “dikaiosynē” which means: the state acceptable to God which becomes a sinner’s possession through that faith by which he or she embraces the grace of God offered to him or her in the expiatory (atonement) death of Jesus Christ. Such powerful knowledge embedded within the Scripture that we can pull from!

When a sinner accepts Jesus Christ and what He did for them on the cross at Calvary, they are in right standing in the eyes of the Lord. They ‘posses’ the state of being righteous by the grace of God. Once again this can only be done when a person accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior by Faith in what He did for them at the cross.

After accepting the Lord into your heart and acquiring His righteousness which is acceptable to God, it is now up to you to maintain a right standing with the Lord. We can no longer just live our lives however we want to live them, but we should want to strive to be more and more like Christ every single day.

Hebrews 10:26-27 breaks it down perfectly as the writer of Hebrews details, “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.”

So, what this is letting us know is that Jesus’ righteousness will allow us to be considered upright in God’s eyes, but we also have to actively refrain from living a life of sin which will lead to judgment. The key word that we want to highlight out of the passage of Scripture is the word “willfully” meaning that you know it is wrong, but you do it anyway with no repentance. That is a very dangerous place to be!

Jesus Christ died a painful death for our “just in case” just in case we decide to make Him our Lord and Savior. A lot of times we don’t truly understand the magnitude of what He actually did for us. Why do we find it so difficult to love Him as much as He loves us. How do we show Him that we love Him? John 14:15 describes it perfectly when Jesus states, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”

Conclusion:

One thing that we can never forget is the fact that our righteousness will never be good enough for God’s standards. By faith you have to accept the Lord Jesus Christ and what He did for you on the cross in order to receive His righteousness. This is the only righteousness that is acceptable in the eyes of God.

Once you receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, it is up to you to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord. The wages of sin will always be death (Romans 6:23) a spiritual and physical separation from the Lord. Strive to live your life upright in everything that you do so that you will know where your eternal destiny will be!
