The cross defeated death

The Power of the Cross of Christ-Took away the Power of Death

There are so many benefits that believers of Jesus Christ have been afforded because of what Jesus did on the Cross at Calvary. One of the most amazing advantages that Christians have is the ability to live eternal lives with Christ. Before Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection believers of God went to a place called Abraham’s bosom.

Let’s take a look at the passages of Scripture that disclose Abraham’s bosom in more detail.

Luke 16:22-23 illustrates, “So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.” Here we can see a clear distinction between two places that a person that died in that time can go to. One place is where the believer Lazarus is going to and that is called “Abraham’s Bosom” and the other place that is mentioned is Hades where he is being tormented.

As we go even farther, we can determine that this place is somewhere they are both located and can see each other, but they are separated by a gulf of water. Luke 16:25-26 depicts, “…Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

Not only were Lazarus and the rich man separated by a gulf of water, but one was being comforted while the other was being tormented. The reason why this powerful story is so significant is because Lazarus being a believer of God still did not have access to heaven because the sin debt had not been paid. That completely changed after the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ!

Let’s take a look at some key passage of Scripture that reveal to us exactly what happened when Jesus fulfilled the necessary atonement for our sins.

Matthew 27:52-53

“Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;  and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.”

The torn veil signified that there was no longer a barrier between God and man. We can now come to the throne of grace boldly, Hebrews 4:16. The bodies of the saints that were in Abraham’s bosom had now been resurrected. They appeared to many of the people that were around meaning that they were seen as a testament that Jesus meant exactly what He said regarding resurrection.

Then the Lord makes it more clear in 2 Timothy 1:10 when He states, “But has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” We can definitively determine that Jesus abolished death because of the sacrifice that He made on the cross at Calvary!

The words “has abolished” being used is the Greek word “katargeō” which means: to render idle, inactive, inoperative, to bring to nought, and to make of none effect. So, what that means is that Jesus Christ has brought death under His feet. When a Christian passes away, they don’t just die, but they live an immortal and eternal life. There is so much Power in the cross of Christ that many of us just scratch the surface!

In the Old Testament we see when a person that is oppressed with sickness, plagues, or diseases they would die unless the Lord intervened and stopped it from happening. In the New Testament Scriptures, we see that Jesus Christ went around healing the sick, casting out demons, and raising the dead. Not only was He able do these miraculous things, but He sent out His disciples to do so as well!

Matthew 10:1 depicts “And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.” Not only do we see this power being talked about here but Matthew 10:8 also details, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”

These two significant passages of Scripture reveal to us the power and authority that a believer of Jesus Christ has over these hindrances! Satan would love to keep you ignorant to his devices, but the Lord gives us all the information that we need to live a victorious life in His Word!

The problem is that many believers of Christ do not take God’s Word at face value and so they read His Words, but don’t stand on them by faith until they come into fruition. Remember God does not lie (Numbers 23:19), if He said it, He is faithful to come through on His promises!

Let’s take another look at some powerful verses of Scripture that reveal to us how the Lord Jesus overcame death through His death on the cross.

1 Corinthians 15:53-54

“For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

So much to unpack from these powerful passages of Scripture! The Apostle Paul is revealing to us some amazing revelation regarding the eternal life of the believer of Jesus Christ. He is describing the moment when Jesus is returning for His church and every person that is going with Him will have a glorified body. This is what he means when he mentions corruptible will put on incorruption.

The word “incorruption” being used here is the Greek word “aphtharsia” which means: the body of a man (woman) exempt from decay after the resurrection. The word “immortality” being used here is the Greek word “athanasia” which means: undying and everlasting. Then we see where the Lord Jesus has swallowed up (devour or destroy) death in His victory on the cross at Calvary!

What we can determine when we break down these key words is that death no longer has a hold of us. Whether we die a death as a Christian before the Lord Jesus comes for His bride (the church) or we are alive and get caught up in the air to meet the Lord (the rapture of the church, 1 Thessalonians 4:17).

Either way a born-again believer of Jesus Christ has the opportunity to live an eternal life with the Lord. This was not available to believers before the cross of Christ and that is why it is so significant. The “good news” is that we no longer have to worry about life after death because we know that we will be with the Lord eternally.

Conclusion:

There are so many benefits that are afforded to those that put their faith in Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross at Calvary! One of the most significant ones is the gift of eternal life. There is no greater feeling than to know that one day the Lord can look at you and say well done, good and faithful servant as you meet Him in heaven, Matthew 25:23!

Unfortunately, there are so many people that live a life of defeat because they are not standing on the Word of God. He stated to us that we are to heal others and what that means is that we ourselves can also be healed from every sickness or disease. The fact that we have been afforded the opportunity of eternal life doesn’t mean that we can’t live a healthy and victorious one in the process!
