Spiritual Emptiness-Being Empty

When we think of being spiritually empty, we can sum it up as: the state of being completely disconnected to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. It is being dry and void of everything that can connect you to the Lord. Non-believers and believers can experience being spiritually empty when they feel separated from God because of sin, try to fulfill a void that only the Lord can fill, when they are not in the Word of God, and many other reasons.

One of the main explanations as to why remaining spiritually dry can be dangerous is because the enemy and his demonic kingdom love to live in empty, dry, places. He loves to attack us when we are spiritually depleted because he knows that those are our most vulnerable moments as believers of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 5:8 is very clear when Peter states, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

Peter is letting us know the necessity of remaining sober (collected in spirit and unto the offering of prayer, and vigilant (to watch, be cautious, and active) because the enemy is lurking searching for people to devour. What that really means is the fact that there are believers and non-believers alike that the devil can and will devour.

When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, prayed up, your boots laced up, and you are continually in your Word, the devil will have a difficult time coming against you! One of the quickest ways to become a victim at the hands of the enemy is to be living a life of sin. The fact of the matter is that sin creates a wedge between you and the Lord. When there is distance in your relationship with God, you are a prime candidate for the devil’s attacks.

One thing that we need to make sure that we understand is that material things will never replace the spiritual emptiness that a person may feel. All that will do is temporarily fulfill your fleshly desires for that one moment. A passage of Scripture that gives us an example of how you can replenish your spirit if you feel void of the Lord is found in John 7:37-38. “On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

Here we can clearly see that Jesus is declaring to us that if we are thirsty (spiritually dry and depleted) we can go to Him. The word “thirsts” is the Greek word “dipsaō” which means: to suffer from thirst, those who painfully feel their want of, and eagerly long for, those things by which the soul is refreshed, supported, and strengthened.

In other words, it’s a spiritual replenishing that can only come from the Lord. It is living water, which is another description of the Holy Spirit, that will fill a believer of Christ up to capacity. It is such a refilling that the living water will actually flow through you and touch those around you! That is how potent God’s living water is!

Let’s take a closer look at what the words spiritual empty means out of the book of Matthew.

Matthew 12:44

“Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.”

Here we can determine that Jesus is giving us an extremely significant lesson on deliverance. When He delivers us from demonic bondage, it is vital that we then fill our temple (body) up with the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, worship, prayer, fasting, etc. You best believe the demons that you just got delivered from are just watching to see when a more opportune time may come to enter back in.

The word “empty” being used here is the Greek word “scholazō” which means: to be unoccupied. In other words, the demonic oppression has lifted off you through the power of the Lord Jesus, but it is void of anything else. In fact, it is exactly as it was from the moment you received your deliverance. This is one of the many ways that the devil and his demonic kingdom find ways back into your life.

Another place that the word empty is used is found in 1 Corinthians 7:5 and that definition of “empty” states: to give yourself over to a thing. When you don’t fully commit to Jesus as your Lord and not just your Savior, it can cause so many problems in your life. The power of God is the only THING more powerful than the demonic bondage that you just came out of.

The devil knows this all too well, and so what he will do is just wait around and take his time and wait to see what you’re going to do with your deliverance. Are you going to take it seriously and do what you need to do to stay free or are you going to use your deliverance as an opportunity to just gain some relief from the pressure of the enemy in your life.

Deliverance is the easy part, it’s staying free that is going to take dedication, work, effort, and determination on your part. Are you in it for yourself or are you truly wanting to seek the Lord with all of your heart, soul, and mind, Jeremiah 29:13. That is what is going to ensure that you maintain your deliverance and prevent you from being spiritually empty.

Conclusion:

One of the most dangerous things that you can be as a believer of Jesus Christ is in a spiritually depleted state. This is especially the case if you’ve just gone through some form of deliverance. The devil does not give up easily and will try every single angle that he can to make sure that you don’t stay free.

Being spiritually empty means that you have received freedom through the power of Jesus Christ, but you did not fill your temple “body” with the things of the Lord. Remember, the enemy is in it for the long game and will wait around until he can find the best time to strike and when he does your demonic oppression will intensify times seven!
