The Power of the Cross of Christ-Disarmed the enemy

There is no doubt about it; the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is one of the most powerful sacrifices that has ever been done for all of humanity! If the devil and his kingdom knew what the Lord had planned to redeem the human race, he would have done everything that he could in his power to prevent Jesus from dying on the cross at Calvary.

Satan is not all knowing and so he could not have ever predicted what God was going to do. In fact, this was something that had already been established from the foundation of the world. Revelation 13:8 details, “All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

The Lord is omniscient (all-knowing) and knew that we would need to be redeemed from the curses that fell upon us because of what Adam did at the garden of Eden. Jesus reconciled us back to God the Father (2 Corinthians 5:18), paid our entire sin debt (Ephesians 1:7), allowed us to be in right standing in the eyes of the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:21), and so much more!

What I am going to focus on in this article is the fact that the Lord triumphed over the devil and his entire demonic kingdom giving us full authority over every one of his schemes. Before the cross, believers of God did not have the authority to cast out demons and so they would be able to receive some relief from demonic oppression but would not be able to receive full freedom. An example of this temporary relief is when King Saul would have David play his harp and the music that flowed from it was anointed by God and the demons would leave briefly but would return, 1 Samuel 16:23.

Now because of what the Lord Jesus did on the cross at Calvary, we now have authority over every demonic attack that the devil and his kingdom would throw our way! Luke 10:19 declares, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

We can definitively see that Jesus Himself is revealing to us some powerful truths and that is that we have full power over the devil and every one of his demonic schemes. We are also told that nothing he does can hurt us. It then boils down to whether or not we truly believe it. Are we standing on the word of God over every lie of the enemy or are we coming into agreement with his lies?!

That is what is going to make all the difference on whether or not you appropriate the Lord’s Word and take your full authority over the devil and his devices. What Jesus did on the cross at Calvary affords every believer the opportunity through Salvation to have: health, healing, deliverance, protection, and provision, and many other benefits.

We often underestimate the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, He paid for a sin debt that we could not pay on our own. One of the main advantages that we now have as born-again believers is the power to overcome the enemy’s plans. Let’s take a look at some passages of Scripture that disclose exactly that!

Colossians 2:14-15

“Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”

Here we can see the power of the cross of Christ working powerfully against the devil and his entire demonic kingdom. His death, burial, and resurrection wiped out the legal requirements that needed to be met through the law of Moses (ordinances). Now, with the new covenant found in Christ we receive His righteousness.

What that means is that those that place their faith in Jesus and what He did for us are seen in right standing in the eyes of the Lord. So, the devil can no longer bring forth those old accusations against you because they have been nailed to the cross of Christ. Before this, the enemy had the legal right to keep believers bound because of what Adam did in the garden of Eden.

Never once do you see the casting out of demons in the Old Testament and that was because those that believed in God did not have the authority to legally do so. Can you imagine the helplessness and bondage that they felt prior to Jesus coming to bring forth Salvation. Now, because of Jesus we have the legal right to get set free as He states very clearly in Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give you the authority…”

We can also see the authority given to believers of Christ found in Mark 16:17 and it states, “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues.” What a powerful truth that this passage of Scripture is revealing to us! Why not take full advantage of all of the benefits that we have been afforded as Christians.

The last part of the verse of Scripture found in the book of Colossians 2:15 states, “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.” The word “disarmed” being used here is the Greek word “apekdyomai” which means: wholly to strip off for oneself (for one’s own advantage). When you put that into perspective, what Jesus did gives us such an extreme upper hand!

We no longer have to be bound and chained by the schemes of the enemy because we have the authority to overcome! Unfortunately, many Christians treat the devil like he still has the power to keep them in bondage and so that don’t fight back with the Word of God.

So, many believers of Christ are not living a life to their full potential because of the chains and shackles that the devil has them in! We have to get to the point where we believe the Lord at face value or we don’t. He does not lie and if He said it, then He is faithful to complete what He said He would do.

Conclusion:

One of the many benefits that believers are able to obtain because of what Jesus did on the Cross at Calvary is the authority over the devil and his entire kingdom! We should never approach the enemy from a place of defeat, but from a place of victory! Jesus paid the entire sin debt for all of humanity so that we would no longer live in bondage.

Whether or not we appropriate God’s Word is really up to us. We can either stand firm on the Lord’s Word knowing that God has the final say, or we can remain bound feeling like there is no way out! Jesus was very clear when He stated in Matthew 19:26 “But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible!”
