Why Your Mountain Won’t Move-You Speak Words of Defeat
Often times our mountains (struggles, trials, and tribulations) won’t move because of the words coming out of our mouths! We say the Lord can do anything and we are more than conquerors through Christ (Romans 8:37), but do we truly believe it? When things are going in our favor and it seems like the Lord is right there every step of the way, it is easy to know that we are overcomers.
What about those moments when the Lord is attempting to take you to a higher level of Faith and it requires you going through some things? The Lord will test our faith to see if we truly believe that He is Who He says He is. If He does not lie (Numbers 23:9) and He puts His Word above His own Name (Psalm 138:2), why do we struggle to take His Words at face value?
One of the reasons that our faith wavers is because of the size of the mountain that we are facing. It was perfectly within reach when your mountain was a small mole hill, but when your struggle became Mount Everest, your faith in the Scriptures weakened significantly. We cannot get discouraged when we are up against a massive storm.
We need to stand on the Word of God regardless of the circumstance that we are in. We can never underestimate the Power of the Scriptures; they are your weapon in the Spirit tearing down all adversity that is coming at you. Get the Lord’s Word so engrained in your heart and mind that warfare becomes automatic. The devil knows the Scriptures just as well as any believer and will attempt to twist them around if you’re not careful.
He did that very thing with Eve in the Garden of Eden, and she fell for his lies, Genesis 3:1-5. We cannot allow the devil to speak into our ears when life becomes difficult. We need to speak the Word of God and refrain from speaking words of defeat. In one breath you’re praising the Lord for how big of a God He is and how He is going to see you through and then in the next breath you’re telling everyone around you how sick you are and how you feel like you will never be made well!
Let’s take a look at some powerful Scripture compared to words of defeat.
Powerful Scriptures:
Exodus 14:14 “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”
2 Chronicles 20:17 “You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.”
Psalm 91:9-10 “Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling.”
Ephesians 6:10 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.”
Psalm 34:19 “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”
Words of Defeat:
“I am so sick and I am never going to get better!”
“The doctor said I only have months to live!”
“My finances are never going to be where they need to be!”
“My children are so far gone, they will never be saved!”
These are only a few examples of the differences from speaking the Word of God and words of defeat. Our words will either tear down our mountains or they will build them even bigger. We have to learn how to take control of our circumstances knowing that the Lord has already given us the victory!
When your words do not align with the Scriptures, you are telling your obstacle that it is ok to stay! We cannot afford to let the enemy have a “place” or foothold in our lives. The moment that you come into agreement with his lies is the moment that you have allowed him to have the upper hand.
Get firm with the devil and let him know that you have the authority through Christ to trample on serpents and scorpions and he will not wreak havoc in your life, Luke 10:19. He can’t have you or your family and you will go to battle with him for as long as it takes to claim your victory!
Let’s take a look at a passage of Scripture that gives us some insight into the importance of choosing your words wisely during tribulation.
James 3:10
“Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”
Here we can see that James is giving us some very important knowledge pertaining to our mouths. There is no way that we are going to see the Lord’s Promises working in our lives if we continue to cancel them out with words of defeat. One minute we are speaking out the Scriptures through prayer and the next minute we are proclaiming word curses over ourselves.
What that will do is cancel out the prayers that you have already petitioned to the Lord. James 1:7-8 explain it perfectly when James states, “For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” When you are not standing firm on the Lord’s Words but instead you continue to sway left or right, you are unstable.
The Lord is clear about what He has to say about people that are double-minded, they will not receive anything from the Lord. Why? An unsure and hesitant person lacks faith, and the opposite of faith is unbelief. You say that you truly believe that the Lord means what He says but your actions say something different. That is the definition of a double-minded person.
Hebrews 11:6 makes it clear about what God has to say about having faith and it states, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” When we don’t fully place our entire assurance on the Lord it is impossible for us to please Him!
Speaking words of defeat instead of Words of Faith in the Promises of God will never get your mountain to move. In fact, it will cause it to grow that much bigger. Our mouth should be speaking blessings and not curses over our circumstances because we know the Big God that we serve Who is able to do exceedingly above all that we can fathom, Ephesians 3:20.
Words of Defeat from the Spies in the Land
Let’s take a look at words of defeat in action through the Scriptures so that we can have a clear understanding of the damage that they bring.
Numbers 13:1-2 details, “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.”
Here we can see that the Lord gave a direct commandment to Moses and he followed through on God’s Word and sent out spies from every tribe of Israel. This land was the promised land filled with milk and honey that the Lord swore to give them. They were to return with a description of what the land looked like: whether it is poor or rich, good or bad.
This is the response of the spies that went to the land:
Numbers 13:25 “And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.”
Numbers 13:31-32 “…the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.”
We can clearly see that the spies that went to the promised land had nothing but negative words to report and words of defeat. They forgot that the Lord had just brought them out of the land of Egypt in a miraculous way! They doubted that the Lord would be with them to help them conquer the people that were in the promised land.
It didn’t stop there, let’s take a look and see what else they had to say in the report that they gave:
Numbers 13:33 details, “There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
They continued on with their words of defeat and negativity knowing that death: and life is in the power of the words that you speak, Proverbs 18:21. Let’s see what the Lord has to say about the spies and their words of unbelief.
Numbers 14:23 dictates, “They certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it.”
The opposing words that they spoke lost them the chance of entering the promised land! How many times have our words of defeat caused us to lose our chance at healing, deliverance, freedom, provision, protection, etc. We really need to take a step back when the lies of the enemy attempt to make their way out of our mouths!
Conclusion:
A lot of times we find that our mountain just will not move because of our words of defeat. The doctor gives a bad report and instead of coming against that negative information we come into agreement with it. The devil is a liar! We need to fight back all the attacks of the enemy attempting to provoke us to speak out words of defeat when it comes to our circumstances.
We can never forget that death and life is truly in the power of our words: we can either choose life or we can choose death, the choice will always be ours! Make it a point to go to the Lord first before the doctor, before your spouse, or before your family member. Why do we surpass our Creator and ask for counsel from the created? Never let that be you!
