Righteousness-A Warfare Weapon
When we break down the word righteousness, we can determine that it means: the condition acceptable to God pertaining to integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking, feeling, and acting. It is a person living a life that lines up with the Word of God including the rules and regulations that He has commanded us to abide by.
One thing that we need to fully understand is that righteousness in the eyes of God cannot be obtained within our own deeds or works. We are only counted as righteous through our faith in Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross at calvary. Romans 10:4 details, “Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.”
Another place that reveals how our justification is established through Jesus Christ is found in Romans 3:22-24 and it states, “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
It is only through faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and what He did for us on the cross that we are treated as righteous. When the Lord paid the entire sin debt for all of humanity, those that are believers have their sin wiped away as if it was never there. This brought reconciliation back to God the Father, Romans 5:1.
It is then our responsibility to make sure that we live our lives that is pleasing in the eyes of God. A lot of people see maintaining a life of virtue, purity, and integrity as the Lord not wanting us to have “fun” or may think He is just too harsh. That is very far from the case.
The Lord loves every single one of us and what His biblical stipulations do is keep us out of harm’s way. We are up against a very powerful adversary that wants nothing more than to steal, kill, and destroy every single one of us, John 10:10. When we break God’s rules for our lives, it gives the devil the legal access to wreak havoc.
Being in right standing with the Lord and living a life that is pleasing in His eyes protects us from unnecessarily demonic warfare. The enemy is a legalist and will find every single “place” or loophole so that he can stop you from walking in the destiny that God intended for you. Your righteousness is actually a warfare weapon against the schemes of devil!
Let’s take a look at a verse of Scripture that details how righteousness is a Spiritual warfare weapon.
Ephesians 6:14
“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness.”
As we dissect this powerful passage of Scripture, we can determine that the Truth and righteousness go hand and hand. These two military pieces were a part of the entire armor of God that is detailed in Ephesians 6:10-20. Girding your waist with Truth is pertaining to the Word of God.
You cannot possibly live a life that is upright and pleasing to the Lord if you do not know His guidelines and stipulations found in His Word. That word “girded” being used is the Greek word “perizōnnymi” which means: equipping oneself with the knowledge of truth and the thing in which one girds himself.
So, in other words it is arming yourself with the knowledge of the Scriptures so that you can stand firm when the enemy comes your way. Never forget the fact that God’s Word is an actual weapon, it is a Sword in the Spirit that can combat the devil’s attacks, Hebrews 4:12.
In order for your Sword to be activated, it needs to be wielded. This can be applied as an offensive and a defensive weapon. It’s used as an offensive weapon when you are being obedient to God’s Word, being a doer of His Word and not just a hearer, James 1:22. Your Sword is used as a defensive weapon when you renew your mind especially when the devil attempts to shoot arrows your way, Romans 12:2.
As you learn to gird your belt of Truth into place it is what is going to hold your breastplate of righteousness together. So, what exactly is the breastplate of righteousness? The word “breastplate” being used in the text is the Greek word “thorax” which means: breastplate or corselet, it consists of two parts and protects the body on both sides from the neck to the middle.
The words “of righteousness” being used here is the Greek word “dikaiosynē” which means: integrity, virtue, purity of life, uprightness, correctness in thinking, feeling, and acting. When we combine these two powerful words together, we can conclude that what the Apostle Paul is revealing to us is the breastplate of righteousness is a barrier that protects your heart which houses the way that you think, feel, and act.
God is very clear about the condition of our hearts as we can see in Jeremiah 17:9 and it states, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” It is deceitful and wicked and if we are not careful, the way that we act, think, and feel will allow the devil to create a “place” or stronghold in your heart.
That is why the breastplate is such a significant part of your warfare armor because it protects the vulnerable part of your body. The belt of truth works right alongside it because it must be fastened properly to secure the protective cover surrounding your heart. Never forget that the righteousness that is protecting you is not your own, but it is the righteousness of Jesus Christ.
So, what happens in the realm of the spirit is that breastplate protects us against the slanderous accusations from the enemy. He will bring forth condemning thoughts like:
“You’re not good enough!”
“The Lord can’t truly use you!”
“You’ll never be fully delivered!”
Those demonic arrows may form, but they will not prosper, Isaiah 54:17. When the devil begins to accuse us day and night, they do not hold weight because we are considered justified (just as if we had not sinned) in the eyes of God because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross at Calvary!
However, that does not mean that we continue in willful sin, God forbid, Romans 6:1. 1 John 3:7-8 describes it perfectly when John states, “Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
Those that make it a practice to live upright in the eyes of the Lord will be in right standing. You cannot sin continually and think that everything is going to be ok because that is far from the case. In fact, what that will do is open the door to the enemy to come into your life legally and wreak havoc! Your breastplate should be securely fastened at all times which will require a lifestyle of integrity, virtue, and purity of life!
Conclusion:
When we think of the word righteousness we don’t think of it as a spiritual warfare weapon. It is very much just that! When we live our lives in a way that is pleasing to the Lord, abiding by the stipulations laid out in His Word it prevents the enemy from having an open door to come into your life. He is always looking for a way to create strongholds that hinder your progression in the Kingdom of God.
The Lord already paid the ultimate price when He gave His life for us on the cross at Calvary. What that did was disarm the devil and his kingdom preventing them from having as much power over us as they did before the cross, Colossians 2:15. It is now up to us to take the authority that Jesus gave us and live our lives in a way that is going to prevent the enemy from gaining access: stealing, killing, and destroying, John 10:10.
