Spiritual Emptiness-Swept
When we think of the word empty, we often think of a place or the state of containing nothing and being completely unoccupied. That is exactly what a person that is spiritually empty feels like when it comes to the things pertaining to the Lord. They haven’t read their Bible in a while, they haven’t prayed, spent time in the presence of the Lord, and so forth. They feel completely disconnected to God and everything having to do with Him.
This kind of Spiritual Emptiness is a very dangerous place to be considering the fact that the devil and his demons thrive in dry, empty places. Our bodies are like our spiritual house as we can see depicted in 2 Corinthians 5:1, Paul states, “For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
The Apostle Paul is making it clear to us that our bodies are like houses and function in similar ways that a physical house would. For instance, when we want our houses to be clean, we need to use soap and water and wash away all the dirt and grime from certain areas in the house. We also need to sweep all the excess dust from the ground so that it can remain clean.
Similarly, we need to keep our spiritual houses cleansed from the filth that can infiltrate it. We need to stay in the Word of God so that our minds will be renewed, we need to pray and stay connected to the Holy Spirit, we need to praise the Lord in Spirit and in Truth, etc. What that does is keep our spiritual houses filled with the Lord allowing us to prevent the enemy from coming back in to create chaos!
Why is keeping our temple filled with God so important. Luke 11:24 details, “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.” Here we can determine that demons love dwelling in spiritually dry places because it doesn’t expose them. They can wreak havoc secretly without anybody challenging them.
One of the main aspects of keeping your spiritual house clean is to keep it swept. Let’s take a look at the passage of Scripture out of the book of Matthew that discloses this very thing.
Matthew 12:44
“Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.”
The Lord Jesus Christ is giving us some vital revelation in this passage of Scripture regarding deliverance. Once the Lord has set you free from demonic oppression, you have to do your part and keep your house “temple” filled with God’s Word, God’s Spirit, praise, fasting, prayer, etc. The devil and his demons shouldn’t have any room to come back in!
If you live your life exactly the same way after you get delivered, the enemy will have the legal right to invade your space. The only way that you will see true freedom and deliverance is when you take your walk with the Lord Jesus Christ seriously. You have to hate the sin that you were living in and come out of agreement with everything that resembles the devil and his demonic kingdom.
God’s Word is very clear when it states in 1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” Once you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are called out of darkness and transferred into His Kingdom of light.
This alone should put a spark in you to change from the sin-filled person that you used to be. When you receive deliverance from the bondage of the devil, your house is “swept” through the power of the Holy Spirit and the blood of Jesus Christ. Let’s take a closer look at exactly what the word “swept” actually means.
The word “swept” being used here is the Greek word “saroō” which means: to sweep, sweep by cleaning, and to brush off. So, once the Lord cleanses and sweeps (makes clean) your house, it is critical that you make sure that you don’t do anything that is going to invite filth back into your space. Engaging in sin is one of the most common reasons why the enemy is allowed back into your already swept home.
How does a person ensure that their house remains swept clean after deliverance? One of the main ways to ensure that your temple remains cleansed is by getting into the Word of God. What this does is help you renew your entire frame of mind. This will also give you weaponry (Scriptures) to combat the enemy when he attempts to make his way back into your life!
We can never forget that the devil and his demonic kingdom are very familiar with every one of your weaknesses. In fact, they have been studying your entire bloodline for far longer than you can even imagine. What that means is they know the things that are going to get you caught up after you receive freedom from their schemes.
For example, when the Lord delivered me from alcoholism that ran in my bloodline, people that I hadn’t spoken to for the longest time were inviting me to go have a drink. It didn’t make any sense, or did it? The enemy can use your family, friends, and many other routes to tempt you to fall back into the sin that you were just delivered from.
That is why it is vital that you immediately fill your temple “house” up with the Word of God, praise, worship, prayer, etc. after the Holy Spirit has swept it clean. The more of the Lord that you fill yourself up with, the less likely you will have to deal with the demonic oppression that you just got delivered from. Proverbs 26:22 details it perfectly as it states, “As a dog returns to his own vomit,
So a fool repeats his folly.”
The very last thing that you ever want to do after receiving freedom from the hand of the enemy is to remain in the same state. You don’t do anything differently which is a very dangerous place to be considering the fact that the enemy will bring demons more wicked than the ones that you had to battle, making your situation even worse, Matthew 12:45.
Conclusion:
After the Lord delivers you from spiritual oppression it is crucial that you fill your temple (house) up with the things of the Lord. The enemy is just waiting to see if you are really taking your walk with Jesus Christ seriously or if you are going to just go back to your old ways.
The reason why remaining filled with the Lord’s Word, prayer, fasting, praise, etc. is imperative is because your house was just swept from demonic invasion and needs to be replaced with everything having to do with God. Deliverance is the easier process, but maintaining your deliverance is going to take tremendous effort on your part!
