Spiritual Emptiness-The End Result
There is no way of getting around it, we are all going to go through seasons in our lives when we feel spiritually depleted. It is what you do in those instances that will determine the outcome of you being spiritually empty. John 7:37-38 gives us the perfect solution when Jesus states, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
Jesus is giving us the answer to spiritual dryness and that is to come to Him and He will fill us with His Holy Spirit. What that does is rejuvenates us and gives us the desire to want to seek after the things of the Lord. We need to be spiritually full regardless of the season that we are in, whether they are victorious ones or defeated ones. That way, when we go through the things that we go through, they may knock us down, but they will not take us out!
That is why being spiritually empty is such a dangerous place to be in. When you are void of God’s Word, His Presence, His Holy Spirit, you don’t have any weaponry to fight the enemy back with. The devil’s mission is to steal, kill, and to destroy, and he will take advantage of every vulnerable moment that you find yourself in.
This is especially the case after receiving some form of deliverance. The enemy and his demonic kingdom want to ensure that they have a place to dwell in and so when they get ejected from their “house” they will try everything within their power to get back in and wreak havoc in your life.
In these moments it is critical that you take your deliverance and freedom seriously. When you get invited to do the things that you used to do when you were in the world, you have to put your foot down and say no! The enemy is a master manipulator and will use the people close to you to attempt to draw you back into sin. You might lose friends over your Salvation, but you have to be all in!
Remember, our fight is not against flesh and blood but against the spiritual wickedness in the spiritual realm, Ephesians 6:10-12. The devil and his demons are highly structured and very militant. They know what it will take to ensure that you don’t maintain your freedom after the Lord delivers you from demonic oppression.
You have to be willing to do your part and make sure that your “house” does not remain empty but that it is filled up with the things of the Lord. Make an intentional effort to get in the Word and stay in God’s Word, it is your double-edged Sword and will help you combat against the enemy’s attack because they will come.
The last thing that you want to happen to you is that your situation becomes 7 times worse. The enemy doesn’t play fair and will do whatever it takes to make sure that you don’t take your walk with the Lord seriously. Let’s take a look at the passage of Scripture that reveals exactly what happens when you don’t take your freedom seriously.
Matthew 12:45
“Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”
We can see here that the Lord Jesus is giving us some revelatory information regarding deliverance and the state of a person’s life when they don’t take their walk with Christ seriously. During the time that Jesus is stating these facts, deliverance was unheard of. The reason for that is because the devil had the legal right to keep us bound because the Lord hadn’t died on the cross yet.
Up until this point, the enemy and his demonic kingdom would create chaos in the lives of believers of God with little to no resistance. One account of this very thing is when King Saul would be tormented by an evil spirit and would only get temporary relief. 1 Samuel 16:14-15 states, “But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him. And Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you.”
Then we can see the temporary relief given to Saul when David plays his anointed music. 1 Samuel 16:23 details, “And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.”
We can determine that the distressing spirit on Saul would leave only for a period but then return. Now, because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross at Calvary, He triumphed victoriously over the devil and his demonic kingdom, Colossians 2:15. As a result of what Hid did for us, we have the authority to cast out the enemy and his demons because of the power that we now have over them, Luke 10:19.
That does not mean that it will happen automatically, we can still give the devil legal access into our lives if we choose to live in the sin that we were delivered from. That is why it is imperative that we take the time out of each day regardless of what we have going on to set one on one time alone with the Lord.
It is easy to get side-tracked by the cares of this world and that is exactly what the devil wants. He knows that if you are spiritually empty, it is easier for him to cause you to stumble and open the door to his demons that will walk right on in. After your “house” is swept clean, you have to do what it takes to maintain your freedom!
One example of what can happen when you choose to be a lukewarm (not fully committed) Christian is found in John 5:14. It states, “Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.” Beyond a shadow of a doubt Jesus is telling this man that was just delivered and healed that he needs to make sure that he sins no more because he runs the chance of becoming worse.
Now let’s take a closer look at the passage of Scripture where our primary text is found, Matthew 12:45. The Lord is making it known to us that if we keep our houses spiritually void of God, the demon that just got cast out will bring forth seven more wicked spirits than itself. Then Jesus lets us know the result of that happening, “…and the last state of that man is worse than the first…”
The information that Jesus is giving to us is the key to understanding deliverance and what happens in the spirit realm after one receives deliverance. He is letting you know that when you do not take your walk with the Lord seriously the enemy can see that and in attempts to try to reestablish strongholds and demonic oppression back into your life, he will bring seven more wicked spirits with it to really wreak havoc in your life!
A practical example of this is a person that receives some deliverance because they are overcoming an almost addiction to alcohol. After the Lord delivers that person, if they don’t begin to renew their mind, pray, worship the Lord in spirit and Truth, that hindering demon will bring more wicked ones around.
Now, instead of an almost addiction, you are now battling full blown alcoholism. That is exactly how the devil operates, His mission is to steal, kill, and destroy by any means necessary and he will do just that! You have to get to the point where you hate the sin that you once lived in and everything about it. Not only are you going to refrain from engaging in it again, you will apply the Lord’s promises to your situation!
Conclusion:
One thing that we need to fully understand is that life is completely spiritual: there is the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of the devil both vying for your soul. The Lord’s Kingdom provides us with eternal life with the Lord forever. The devil’s kingdom provides, death and eternal separation from God. It is up to you which kingdom you decide that you want to be a part of.
Once you make the decision that you want to live your life for Jesus Christ and receive deliverance, it is up to you to make the right choices that will help you maintain your deliverance. Fill your “house” up with the Word of God, prayer, fasting, the Holy Spirit, etc. If you don’t you are risking the chance of your situation being 7 times worse!
